Honda S2000
« on: August 08, 2007, 05:27:41 PM »
The wife and I just stopped by and drove a 2002 Honda S2000.
At first the car salesman said he'd need to ride with me.
I asked him if he had heart troubles of any kind.
He came back with the key and said the wife could ride with me ;D

First thing the wife said, "It sounds like your motorcycle" as I approached 9k ;D ;D ;D

Has little to no torque but loves to rev,
fair road feel,
stiff suspension but doesn't really transmit the road feel through
to the driver.

Plus side, it does sound like a Honda motorcycle ;D ;D ;D

My dad just sold his '00 S2K for an '07 Civic SI.  :'( >:(

The S has basically zero torque, but the vtec kicking in ~7K makes it all worth it. My only serious complaint is that it gives NO warning before it looses traction. Overall a great driver's car, but no motorcycle.

Never understood that car...it doesnt do anything for me...sorta like a Miata or whatever...if you go import tuner there are just so many options out there for a fraction of the cost. No offence just not my bag....

I love the S2000. I drove a friends a few years back. I had to keep the top open because I am 6'4". I could look over the windshield.  ;D

I scarred the crap out of a Honda sales guy back in 2002. I went to buy a 2002 Civic Si..the short lived hatchback that I really liked. We pulled off of the lot and he said, "Drive it like it was you car."  BIG mistake!! I ended up buying it and I am guessing the sales guy needed a change of pants.   :P

Great cars 8)

I nearly bought one for MrsD when she decided it was time she owned a sports car ::)

After trying pretty much everything available in the UK it came down to a toss up between the S2K or an MX5 (Miata to you colonials), I really loved the Honda's raw attitude, but MrsD preferred the more mild mannered Mazda, so that's what we bought :-\

Probably too harsh for an everyday commute, but I'd still have one as a weekend toy tomorrow, ;D

I wasn't really interested, I just wanted to compare a few of the new cars
out there. None of them do anything for me looks wise.
I wouldn't trade my 1980 Fiat Spider for the lot of them!
I run against them so I wanted to drive a few to see what they got.
Miatas I don't have a desire to drive.

Here's view in a S2000 last weekend,

My time was .6 slower with my 27 year old Fiat which has 160 less HP than the 2000.
We're not in the same class and my pax time was faster. I was shifting to 3rd where the
2000 was going to 2nd.

Still the S2000 off the shelf is a great handling car. I'm going to add the shift beeper to mine
since I have no rev limiter.

Now I want to find a Lotus Exige to drive next.

I like the S2000, but it's got no torque and is demanding to drive fast.  I've got an '01 Boxster S, which weighs more than the S2000, but with 10 more hp and boatloads more torque.  It's WAY more fun to drive than the S2000, IMO, partially because you don't have to rev the piss out of it to have fun or make it go.  The handling and braking is also phenomenal with the mid-engine and the cross-drilled brakes.

'01 S2000

'01 Boxster S

Hey GG, the boxer is a looker too!
There was one running this weekend, he didn't make the top 10.
The Boxer flexes a bit I am told and is hard to keep planted
when it's real twisty. Porsche has always had a handling quirkiness about them.

There was also a Cayman (sp?) which ran a 35 plus. Jim the owner has been
autocrossing since the 60's and is a really fine driver. His ran faster than the Boxer
but it may be drivers.

I would like to try a BMW Z3 with the M engine. The Z3 is lighter than the Z4 and looks a
whole lot better. No one is running them and I know they'd be competitive in
Hill Climbs,  TT's and autocross.

The Cayman is faster than the Boxster because it is basically a Coupe Boxster, so it's stiffer and lighter.

I haven't noticed a lot of flex in mine nor a hard time keeping planted.  It will drift at will and the mid-engine layout makes handling interesting.  Being that I've only driven front-engined cars, which tend to push and resist steering, the Boxster handles like a slot car.  Turn it, and it sticks and goes, like telepathy.  Amazing.  I am a fan of mid-engine cars now.

I'm going the opposite direction- selling my Miata with a hard top (any club racers out there?) in order to get a plain old tool.  A 10 to 15 yo Accord or Civic.  I want a beater.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!
