'77 gas cap (ugly or not)
« on: August 07, 2007, 04:35:14 PM »
My '77 400 super sport came with an "interesting" fuel filler configuration, a little steel cap (looks like it is of a lawn tractor), covered by a black sheet metal monstrosity. One of my major upgrades to my bike was to install a '76 750f fuel tank ($40) which solved my problem and helped the appearance greatly.

I was just wondering if anyone felt this way about the design.

It's definitely personal preference.  I'm sure the thinking back in the late 70's was that the trap door would discourage gas thieves.  In reality, it's not any safer, maybe even less so, then the locks on the protruding filler necks.

What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

I personally dislike the protruding filler caps.  I'll keep my door, thanks. :)

It is what it is.  You open it, put gas in, then you close it.  I'm too busy watching out for other vehicles and road hazards to notice the gas filler while driving.

I have ridden bikes with both styles of gas caps.  And, about town, I've noticed no increased tendency for offers of planned parentage regarding either gas cap style.

Anyone else attracted a mate with their gas cap?

I have also ridden bikes with both exposed and concealed gas caps.

I have noticed that the loose end of my helmet strap seems to flap with more intensity on bikes with exposed caps. I believe it to be some sort of aerodynamic issue - wind tunnel testing may confirm this.

Happy trails.

I did... but it wasn't my gas cap that was protruding at the time.
