hello I'm 17 years old and Live in a very little town called Frederic,MI. I'm getting a 78 cb750k in about a month it'll be in my hands because I'm making payments on it. I can't wait to get it. I've watched the owner drive it around and it cool as hell. I won't drive it because I'm worried I might screw it up some how and still have to pay for it. Once the title is in my hands it'll be part of the family. It'll be treated nicely. Well I just wanated to say hello and give you some info about me.

A CB750 as your first bike at 17!

If you were in the UK you'd be stuck on a 125 (max) until you've passed the test and then limited to 33bhp for two years. THEN you could get a CB750 - as long as you could find some affordable insurance).

I got my first "real" bike when I was 19 (CB500F shown in my avatar) - but the rules were different in those days. Now my son is 18 and has a CG125...

it's not the first bike i roded I've rode a 750 before. BTW the owner of the bike gave me a clymers manual. I've read that thing so many times. I probadly do it again.

This is a fairly tall and heavy (500lbs) 750.

Do yourself a favor and buy the best helmet you can find!

Put a tarp over the tank while you're on it. All that dripping hormone stuff can strip the paint right off. And leave your fat-head ego on the mantle.

are you saying i'm going to over ride my skill level?? you don't know me... so don't make judgments about me please. would you say this to my if i said I was 65?? Just because i'm 17 doesn't mean and going to act every road a drag strip and every corner a track.

I would tell ANYONE who said that a cb750 was their first bike to invest all they could in a helmet...I am 29 and I have had everything from 3.5hp briggs and stratton mini bikes to honda cbr900rr's with about $15000.00 worth of engine work. can you say "212hp in a 400lbs machine"? (add another $6500.00 for the brakes and suspension)

You will find that this bike is a hand full...it was made with sh!tty brakes... poor suspention and more wieght than Bill Gates in a radio shack...

You say you wont race it but thats not the problem it's the 60mph corner on a beautiful day when you spot the Fu(king dead 50lbs beaver lying right in the line that you picked...you hit the brackes to find that they are horribly suited to a bike of this wieght and the rear wheel starts to jump and bounce when you try to switch to another path because the factory suspension is 30 years old and wore out 28 years ago and wasnt that great to begin with.

If I had a kid (boy or girl) if they lived in my house or I paid ANY of thier bills...a cb750 would NOT be thier first bike. You wouldnt believe how much fun or how well an RZ350 handles...

Just be carefull...we dont want another cb750 parts bike

...but...I have the exact same bike as you so I would buy the headlight assembly from you.

As a matter of fact, there are a LOT of 50 to 65 year olds getting bikes for the first time and yes, I have told them the same thing. If you're this defensive and irritable already, go back and read the part about leaving your ego on the mantle. Being pissed off about ANYTHING on a bike is a sure way to get hurt.
Now, because I don't know you and I'm making assumptions, tell us about your above average intelligence and rapier-like sense of humour. Write about all the experience you have and how your judgement capabilities are, for whatever reason, far above that of your peers.

PS; Since 1970 I have always had at least one motorcycle, often times no car. 35 years later I still occasionally overcook a turn or look at the scenery instead of the road. As I write this I have a huge scab on my leg from wearing shorts and backing into an exhaust pipe. A good rider never stops learning and every ride is a practice session- at least to some degree. I would predict that if you already know it all, you're a dead man riding. Your birthday has nothing to do with it.

I'm sorry about the post I just flew off the handle abit. I seen that part of the post and felt like a dumbass. I know I sounded like a jackass. I'm just use to people saying "oh he's 17 he's a pothead and races every car he's own. He'll wreck and about kill himself in a week" type of stuff.

i'm snaging it for 500. i wanted him to ride it so i can get an idea of what the ride is like it doesn't have plates or anything it was just in his yard

I've been hit by a car on the left and about 20 years later on the right. Once with a cast, once with 6 bolts sticking out of my leg. Both a full 9 months. Funny thing is, when you're laying on the street, your first reaction is, "#$%*! The bike! How's the biike?!?!" It's a little later that you notice your foot is pointing the wrong direction.

I mention that to demonstrate that everyone here has "been there". We're on your side. Riding is more than technical skill. It IS a certain level of maturity and the ability to understand that you simply cannot afford to get mad on a bike. Some guys use scars and broken bones as medals demonstrating their past acts of courage and derring-do. You are standing at a crossroad here. ARE you a pothead that races every car he's owned? Why would people get that impression? Are you getting a bike to rebel and "show them", or because you like the idea of riding? SOHC4 riders are deep thinkers, so I hope you didn't get in over your head here... Come on in close to the screen and let your old Uncle Ernie give you a little kiss on the cheek

Hi MPH2, I'm a Michigan rider, too. I expect that since you live in Fredric, that you have some dirt bike riding skills. So I am surprised that your first bike is a street bike. The CB750 is a sweet ride, but a little harder to handle than others. I got my first cycle at age 16 - a new 1970 CB750K0. You are lucky to have lots of country roads (without cars) for riding.
Here are a few tips: 1) Watch out for the deer, especially at dusk. 2) If you cross the Bridge, stay off the grating. 3) Take a rider education course. 4) The CB750 loves to rev. Below 4000rpm=sedate cruiser, 4000-6000rpm=spirited sport rider, 6000-8000rpm=rocket ship. 5) Watch out for the 1000 mile wipeout: you have just mastered the controls, your confidence in your skills is high, and now you relax when riding---big mistake.

hey kevin where do you live in michigan? I've only lived in frederic for about 2 years. lol frederic is a dirt bike course. yea i'm going to buy a good helmet and jacket and pants and gloves too.

Hey MPH2, I live in lovely western Wayne county in the midst of suburban sprawl, about 250 miles to Fredric, where we have only one decent cycling road - Hines Drive - and they close it all day Saturday for bicycles. I had my CB laid up for 15 years from 87 till 02 while I busted my butt and raised my family. You are lucky to live in an area where there is both good road and trail riding. When I had my dirt bike I spent many days riding on the CCC trails through Northern Michigan near Fredric - what a blast! I think all road riders would learn a lot from dirt riding.

Now my family are all supportive of my endeavor to fix and ride my K1, but when my daughter asked to learn to ride it I told her emphatically NO, that this is no beginner ride. I might have added that I worked at a cycle shop for 3 years prior to my purchase and rode every bike that came in and went out, from mini-trail to Electra-Glide, so I wasn't inexperienced when I got the 750.

MPH2, I think you will be OK - IF you can hold it back.
