Port & Polish ??
« on: August 08, 2007, 10:58:29 AM »
Ok, I have a 78 750 K stock motor, with 4 into 2 pipe and air pods. Would it be worth it to have the head ported and polished without going big bore or cam or would I just be wasteing money?

Hi, I always think a porting job is the heart of a good strong motor and even without a cam with some carb tuning you will find a difference. The motor will run much smoother and have better pickup. My 500 race bike has a very standard bottom end but a real good gasflow job and even with a mild cam there is a significant gain.

You might be able to do a good port job yourself- I did mine and I noticed a big difference.

A good observation in general. The 650 has a nice port to begin with. The 750 needs works as does the 550 though the 550 is better than the 750 for sure. When  you get more charge in you get more power....no matter what. Porting ALWAYS improves these bikes.

I'm pretty handy with tools, I was a machinist for 37 years, but I've never messed with any porting or polishing of engines. Is there a post that shows some how to's. I've searched and read quite a few but didn't see much on what to actually do, just how it can help or hinder if you get carried away.

Hi guys.  Curious about how much a port job costs and where would I get the specs to give a machinist?

Send a PM to MRieck (3 posts up) good on price, fantastic workmanship and you don't need to give him any specs, he is the HEAD master ;D

IMO Mike is the BEST.  The port job he did to my head is amazing.  Words can't describe it, you have to see it.

Thanks guys. I still have to get back to a fella named Patrick from the board. Winter is coming and that's when the porting really starts. I feel I'm reasonable in regard to prices. I think I'
ll post them under the services section. I think I'll PayPal Glenn 25.00 for maintaining this board. He gets free porting on one head too.

You can always see the porting a bit Sam.....it's the big dollar rods, pistons, crank, transmission etc you can't see. ;)

haven't run mine yet, but i can say that mike did a very clean and professional job on my head, and from comparing locally i'd say his prices are very fair. i hope to have dyno numbers to support it before too long... ;D ;D ;D

Thanks! I can't wait to see how that bike runs. Nice 2 valve ports to begin with IMO. I wish the 750 was like that.

I'll be snapping a pic of the engine before it goes in the bike and I'll have it framed.  You need to sign it. :D

Do you use a machine to do the porting Mike?  I don't have the nice machines...  Everything was hand work- a couple different sized burs, bunch of grinding compound, and a bunch of polish wax.  It does look nice after you polish everything up- nice and shiny.  I'll end up taking all the aluminum parts of the 650 this winter and polish everything up.  Is there any good clear coat paint that will keep the aluminum from tarnishing?
