Hippie advice needed..
« on: August 08, 2007, 12:40:20 PM »
I need some hippie music for a barbeque i'm trowing in the park this weekend. I'm not talking about the damn Beatles or something (my parents would have), I need some proper 60's underground quality music.

Just trow me some names of artists or albums or even your favorite songs.

peace  :)

The soundtrack album from Easy Rider would probably do for a start.

Happy trails.

Edit: A couple of the songs might not be totally appropriate around impressionable little ones or uptight squares.

(Madmark just beat me to it...) The re-release of the Easy Rider soundtrack has lots of good stuff on it. It has 2 disks- The first is the the soundtrack itself, the second is a "music of the times" disk. Only a few of the tunes on the CD are ever played on the radio, plus it's a nice mix of stuff.

Stuff from Country Joe and the Fish is very trippy as well ("Country" Joe MacDonald remarked on recording the album and listening to it on acid to "make sure it worked"...)

Plant claymores in the yard with trip wire and motion sensor triggers.

Dig holes and put pointed sticks at the bottom, cover the hole with a blanket.

Get a flamethrower.

There's some hippy advice.

That sounds more like paranoia advice.

Does it have to be 60s? Lot of cool music with a similar groove came out in the 70s.

I take it you're not that fond of hippies?

@Eldar: Sure, there were hippies in the 70's too right? As long as it's good music.

Lots of folks had very eclectic tastes (drugs will do that...) as the Woodstock soundtrack will show you.

Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush
Velvet Underground
Soundtrack from 'Hair' (lots of fun)
Vanilla Fudge
MC5 (or were they later? you don't even need drugs for those guys...)
John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers
Paul Butterfield Blues Band (these last two have the best blues harp played by white boys!)
Cream
Johnny Winter
Jimi Hendrix
early Fleetwood Mac (they were great)
Albert King
BB King
Jeff Beck
Muddy Waters
Bob Dylan
Stevie Winwood and Traffic
Aretha Franklin (yes, we listened to R&B and soul as well!)
The Kinks
Buffalo Springfield
The Who
The Stooges
The Byrds
find a copy of the Bloomfield-Kooper-Stills Supersession
maybe Fairport Convention (I'm dredging the memory here...)
Howlin' Wolf
The Yardbirds
The Animals
The Doors
early Jethro Tull
Frank Zappa
The Amboy Dukes (I'm having way too much fun here...)
Blind Faith
Janis Joplin
Kris Kristofferson (if you can even find his early material)
Jerry Garcia/Grateful Dead
Joan Baez
Pete Seeger
Carolyn Hester (who?! I'm supposed to be writing a paper to be posted this afternoon...)

I wish I could actually dig out some old stuff, but my step-son and his wife have what's left of my old vinyl albums, and my cassettes and 8-tracks are all...somewhere...

Okay, back to work.

Have fun!

Ravi Shankar
Moody Blues
Cream
Buffalo Springfield
Yes - Fragile
Doobie Brothers
Early Deep Purple (Before and including Book Of Taliesyn)
Electric Prunes  ( I had too Much to Dream)
Iron Butterfly (In-Gadda-Da-Vida)
Its A Beautiful Day  (White Bird)
Jethro Tull  (Locomotive breath and soo many others)
Big Brother and the Holding Company
King Crimson  (In the Court of the crimson King)  Spacey, altered state music
Mamas And Papas
Nektar
Pink Floyd
Santana
Spirit
Steely Dan
Traffic
Vanilla Fudge
The Who
Strawberry Alarm Clock
Grateful Dead
Blue Cheer  (Summertime Blues)
The Small Faces  - Ogden's Nut Gone Flake
The Animals
Amboy Dukes

The Hippie movement lost popularity in about 1975.  So, pick recordings before that date for the above artists.

What playback duration do you expect?  Some of the Hippie stuff is album length, to extend the time in dreamland.  ;D

The Medic is on the money.

Since I was a young hippie then I know.  ;D ;D

Get some Stephen Stills (he was the glue for the Buffalo Springfield and CSNY).
The best 12 String player bar none!

The DVD about Woodstock has live shots of lots of those the Medic listed.

Or get a copy of Concert for Bangladesh....

Joe Cocker (you need a visual on him ;D)

Country Joe and the Fish.

CCR

I know you said no Beatles, but the White Album should be added.

If you're looking for more underground type stuff, check out the 13th floor elevators, Shuggie Otis "Strawberry Letter 23" is a trippy one, Barclay James Harvest, and theres always The First Edition (w/ Kenny Rogers!) "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" is a classic,.

Edited for spelling and P.S.

P.S. I'm not a hippe! I wasn't even born until 1975... but I like obscure music, and hippies!

 ;D ;D ;D ;D That's a Great picture!
That's a pretty impressive list already, out of all those i only know a few names. I don't know anything about this music, but anyone who can come up with a list that long in seconds must know what he's talking about...

I'll have untill saturday to find some of this stuff, so i'll be in the recordstores tomorrow and friday. I'm bringing my recordplayer to the bbq to add to the 60's feel of the whole thing.
I figure if I about 14 hours of music it will be Ok, it's a BBQ not a sit-inn... ;)
Besides, you have me intrigued now so i'll have to find as many albums as possible.

those are some great lists there!

I've always been the hippy style (without the drugs of course)

Just about any 'hippy' get together has to play jefferson airplanes white rabbit, or a good selection from the moody blues. also, whiter shade of pale

Was pretty young in the hippy days, but lived in the haight.
