I found some time to hit the recordstores, and I did find some vinyl. The guys behind the counter were also looking at me kinda funny, because I normally only buy jazz and hiphop :D

Here's what I got today on vinyl:
Velvet Underground
BB King
Muddy Waters
Aretha Franklin
The Byrds
Four Tops
Bob Dylan

And then I went home and searched my own collection of assorted junk to see if I maybe had some already. BIG SURPRISE! I had a lot of hippie music, and didn't even know it. But a lot of this is more funk. I didn't know hippies listened to that stuff. Here's what I had on vinyl already:
Four Tops
Temptasions
James Taylor
Sly And The Family Stone
Tower of Power
Mahavishnu Orchestra

Creedence Clearwater Revival I found on cd, as well as Gratefull dead.

I think I won't stop searching now, i'll just see how much of this I Can find. I really like the more obscure stuff normally, so it may take me longer than I imagined with so many good tips.
Thanks for taking the time to give an idea of what to look for, and keep the trip down memory lane alive.

Iron Butterfly (In-Gadda-Da-Vida)

Caution; somewhat off-topic.

I was just at Cedar Point this weekend w/my daughter's travel softball team after their last tourny of the year.  Cedar Point is one of the roller coaster capitols of the world, which is just great in that my daughter is terrified of them. Anyway, she finally screwed herself up enough to go one one and loved it and she kept going on it seemingly forever.  It was called the "Iron Dragon"; however, for some reason I kept calling it the "Iron Butterfly".  I then had this song stuck in my head for the rest of the day.  Now, two days later it shows up for the first time in years....eerie, huh?

Back on topic.

Anyone mention "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys yet?
Canned Heat
The Band
Arlo Guthrie
John Mayall
Van Morrison
Todd Rundgren
Jefferson Airplane
Yes
Kinks
Byrds
Doobies

...I think I'm slipping too far into the 70's...

Anyone remember the King Biscuit Flower Hour?

I remember King Biscuit Flour Hour well!  The only station in the NY area that would broadcast it was WNEW-FM.  I listened as a kid in CT.  The best music on radio was on that program...

Oh, Heck Yeah! I was listening to McLaughlin in High School. Double Neck Guitar, Billy Cobham on Drums, Jan Hammer on keyboards  .Rick Laird on Bass (What ever happened to Rick Laird?) and, oh man, Jerry ??? on an electric Blue electric violin...his hair was shorter on one side than the other because he sawed it off with his bow! The first time I saw him, they opened with "Birds of Fire"...the stereo Phase shifting from one side of the auditorium to the other was amazing! Heck with vinyl! I had "Birds of Fire" on 8 TRACK! (I also had Weather Report on 8 Track)...
As it happened, when I was first in college, I lived with a bunch of musicians in Kalamazoo, MI, which was still at the time, the home of Gibson Guitars, so there were a lot of phenominal musicians....one of my room mates played in a band with a kid (drummer)named Michael Walden, who grew up in the area.... he became a deciple of Sri Chinmoy, changed his name to Narada and went to New York to seek his fame and fortune, and ended up as McLaughlin's drummer! You can hear him on "Apocalipse". Now he's a major producer.

How about "The Lamb lies down on Broadway" by Genesis?  I scored an mp3 of a complete live version, bootlegged from a concert way back in CT somewhere.  The recording's a little rough, but incredible stuff nonetheless.

'Digital Rights'.. hmm..

I have the vinyl but the turntable took a dive. Am I thieving if I d/l mp3s of the tunes I already own?

Ok.. fuzzier question: Some punk stole my tape deck with Ozzy in it. Did my 'rights' to that 40min. of noise get swiped along with the Blaupunkt?

Yeah, I know. Buy the cd it sounds better anyway.

Cat Stevens I liked a lot, although he was toward the end of things.  Joni Mitchell, Leo Kotke, Tom Waits was just appearing around then I think- boy talk about underground. He was more L.A., though,  I guess.
Who was that English chick that sang "To Sir With Love?"  Nancy Sinatra- too mainstream?  I really liked a little known group named Jade Warrior.

Mostly I was into Blues and black gospel; Big joe Turner, Lightnin Hopkins, Memphis Slim had some SERIOUS boogie woogie, The Five Blind Boys, Shirley Ceasar and the Caravans could get the crippled to get up and dance.

My first 2 albums were The Soulful Strings and Paul Mauriat w Love is Blue on it.  My friend bought Zappa- Suzi Creamcheese.

I lived right down the street from the park.  Smoked some dope and listened to the Airplane with the window open.  One of the plants on the table was inching towards me and that's when I decided to shave my head.  There was a connection there somewhere, but I can't remember it now...

That was Jerry Goodman...a true maniac on violin. Check out his album "The Flock". The band? The Flock, although his best work might be with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. He's right up there with Jean-Luc Ponty(he worked with Zappa) as far as cutting edge violinists go from "The Day". I think Jean-Luc Ponty went on to a much more successful career.

Later on. after Jerry Goodman, After Billy Cobham broke up the original Mahavishnu Orchestra (didn't like all the spiritual Mumbo Jumbo) and McLaughlin reformed with Michael Walden and used the London Symphony, Gayle Moran (Chich Corea's wife) on vocals, etc, Jean Luc was the violinist...most awesome!

Okay, thought of another band I really liked.  They barely qualify since the first album was in '69.  Climax Blues Band.  Amazing jazz/blues/rock synthesis.  I saw them live at the Capitol Theatre in Porthchester NY for the 'FM Live' tour ('73?).  I wish I still had those albums...

Flipping through the record jackets is easier than trying to dredge everything up from memory.  You younguns wouldn't understand about standing in a record store (what's a record store, I hear you say), flipping through the records like a card catalogue (what's a card catalogue?), enjoying the cover art (what's a cover?  the art is too small to really see on CDs I hear you say), and listening to the store sound system (what's a sound system?  is that like an iPod?).

There's another good thread for some of the GHOF - what was your favorite cover art?  I really like Roger Dean's work for the Yes albums in the 70s.

Yep, we drove over from Stamford (practically next door); me and my cousin Jerry from White Plains.  Our other easy concert venue was the Stamford Museam and Nature Center.  They used to put on outdoor concerts of moderately successful bands (Bullangus comes to mind) for ridiculously cheap and we'd all sit out on the grass...

You might be mistaken there. A lot of youngsters are into vinyl, most of my friends have at least one record player. I have 2 in the studio one in the livingroom and one at work myself. I even have a portable one in case the record-store doesn't have a soundsystem i can use. ;D

All the quality stuff for many types of music still comes out on vinyl, and I remember a few years ago there were more recordplayers beeing sold than guitars!
Perhaps you've heard of hip-hop music? Well all of that comes out on vinyl (or wax as we call it), unless it's total commercial crap. Flipping through records is now known as "diggin' the crates", and most true hiphop fans take this pretty seriously. And no, we don't just buy hiphop, funk/jazz/soul is also on our daily menu.

I'm pretty sure in 50 years time the whole hiphop movement will be compared to your hippie-movement. There are some similarities, the passion for music, lifestyle, and trying to open peoples eyes to make this world a bit better in general. This is not really portrayed on MTV or radio right now, as true hiphop is mostly an underground movement and it's more than just a musicstyle.
I think the hippie thing was also best understood when you were in the middle of it. From the outside it just looked like a bunch of longhaired dudes listening to weird music.

I never thought I would get so many replies, I really hope you guys dig up some old records and listen to them again. Good music never goes out of style.
