I've Got a 81 CB650 in poor condition need help guys:)
« on: April 07, 2005, 03:45:34 PM »
I've got an at present basket case 81 CB650 apparently it was a parts bike for the 1100F I inherited when I lost my Dad to cancer in june of 2001 it's got no alternator the rear wheels off and it's got no oil filter front ends intact though carb linkages seem operational the battery trays just laying on the ground and the regulator or what ever that flat looking electrical thing is that sits behind the solenoid is this bike worth the trouble of fixing and if so where'd I go about getting parts I need for it??? is there anything else I should look for to see if it's missing??? I hate to send this guy to the junk yard to be butchered if it isn't necessary...P.S. I'm much more familiar with the guts of the DOHC 750/900/1100 models so these SOHCs are foreign to me!!!!

From the 750-900s ive looked at the chassis electical is very close.  and even better the engine is simpler. If its worth it just depends how much work you can do. where you at?

Hey There:

There are definately lots of parts for sale on ebay -- in fact, right now there's a ton of '81 650 parts for sale there.

Go to ebay.com, search for CB 650 and also search for CB650.  Ebay parts usually sell for a bit more money because it's so much easier to find and buy them then spending hours and hours in a salvage yard.

Keep in mind that all the 650s that were manufactured between 79-82 are nearly the same.  I believe the 81/82s had different carbs and came with dual front discs.

If you look at a Clymer, Haynes, or Official Honda manual they will detail what's different.  All of these are easily available on ebay, though a bit more patience is needed for the official honda manual.

So, there are many parts which are exactly the same.  For instance, the oil filter housing and associated hardware is all the same, and since the spin-on oil filter adapter I bought from Terry was for a 750, I'd say you could pretty much use any one of them on your 650.

Figure out what the names of your parts are and we'll be able to give you more direction.

Good Luck,

zeke

I'm in Houston Tx, And I think the most significant thing it's missing in order to be started is the alternator carburetors and linkages are all still there and hooked up including the air box some of the cables are missing though as in battery cables maybe the odd shaped electrical parts a regulator or rectifier not entirely sure but I've heard these SOHC can sit for an eternity and once given som fuel a good battery and alittle effort will fire right up...On significant thing to getting it road legal and not burning some exhaust valves is the exhaust has been takin completely off of it hmm which side on these SOHC is the alternator cover if memory serves me well the cover on the left sides the one off the bike the chaing Gaurd??? is off too and the chain rusty and dangling I really don't want to condemn this lil Guy just don't want to have to remortgage the house to fix it either....it's make a good bike for the Wife being as shes 5'4" and with gas prices like they are it'd save a fortune on gas over my 84 GMC Caballero :) you guys must forgive me on this lack of proper terminology I'm more of a Car/Truck Mechanic and while I like the simplicity of bikes by comparison I lack in knowledge of the electrical systems:)

Get an old cb500/550 rolling chassis or frame and build a retro cafe racer, the 650 motor will bolt right in. Just a thought. Cheers, Fergie.

Well Gentlemen I was pleasantly Surprised by the Old Guy(CB650) the Alternator is intact however the Advancer is F-----!!!!! rusted to hell and back it was the advancers cover thats off and apparently missing most everthing else is there it's also missing the starter aswell but no biggie there it would also appear that the oil pressure sending units wires rather chewed up but could probly have new wire spliced in to repair it tires intact found the original 4 into 2 exhaust in fairly decent condition anyone know what size of bolt it is on the advancer??? I'd like to try and turn the block to see if it's seized up or not if it is I'll have to resonsider my decision to fix it if not it's a GIANT green light the rectifier or regulator what ever the hell it's called is still there it's got two electrical plugs coming out of it I didn't see the igniters at all how hards it going to be to aquire an advancer and cover aswell as igniters I'm quite excited at the prospect of getting this (Old Guy) fixed and running for the Wife and Me

Used CDI boxes are $150 (pair) new, that much each. The Reg assy can't be fully bench tested. You can check the diodes in the rectifier but I don't know of a bench test the regulater. Starting the engine and looking for a rise in voltage may be the only test. (PLEASE email me if you know better, I'm having problems with charging systems on these "newer" bikes)
They share parts with other Hondas of similer year models but with many different bikes so someone has to do the homework unless you have the parts in front of you to compare. The other prob is the Custom and Nighthawk have a lot of different parts. 79-80 have some wiring issues that are different than the 81-82 so some parts there are almost one year, one model although you can adapt just about any Honda part to another Honda. Gotta Love Um.

Ok now that I re evaluated the exhaust it would appear i mistook the CB1100Fs exhaust up in the garages rafters as being for the 650 the CB650s exhaust is in 50% good and 50% bad shape what I mean by that is one header/pipe&Mufflers intact and looks great the other side however is broke off right past where the muffler starts as in further back from the bolts so it'd need at the very least a new muffler and if I replace one of something I always replace both.....Now that being said I'd still like to know the best way to manually turn this motor to make sure it isn't seized up I also have changed my view as to it's original purpose since nothing critical was takin off of it and used on the 1100F except possibly the Starter.....I believe my Dad Bought the lil Guy to fix up for a second person to ride with him or perhaps for him to ride around town in either case I'm curious as to what you guys have to say about things as of now is this bike worth my time and effort?? What kinda of gas mileage do they get? Whats the HP&torque output on the lil guy? and did they makem with two keys one for ignition and one for gas cap??? The reason for the last question is the ignition works great but the key won't unlock the gas tank so I can evaluate it to see what kind of condition it's in......Thanks in Advance

Well, there's a big washer on the end of the crank that has wrench flats in it. It should have a 10mm bolt trhough it. Don't try to turn it with the bolt. You'll just break it off.

I have the whole ignition system for that bike. There's one in my back yard right now. I'll sell you the plate, pickup coils, and advancer for $100.

You also have a used parts dealer in Texas that might have parts for your bike. I got this link from a friend who lives in Dallas:
