How to find piston/ring size for CB500 ??
« on: August 21, 2007, 12:26:45 PM »
I'm doing an engine clean up on a '71 CB500, and trying to find out what piston ring size it has on it, so that I can order some new ones. The pistons say "honda" on one side, and "323 2" on the other. The middle ring has "R" stamped at one end, but there are no other markings anywhere, or on any other rings.

I don't have a cylinder gauge or micrometer.

Lastly, does anyone know where in the manual it gives piston gap specs and ring gap specs?

thanks!!!!!,
-Carl

If all it says is "R" they are standard size and Dave Silver was doing reasonably priced Standard piston kits for the 500.
Marks on top ring nearly always wear off and the 3 piece scraper ring has no marks.
If you are that far in its a good idea to fit a new cam chain, which you can link, and drop the sump to check that the primary chain hasent eaten into the oil galleries, that chain replacement is an engine strip.

I presume Dave Silver is contacted through this forum? My local shops list the set of rings for around ~ $34. I don't think that's too bad.

Thanks for the info and tips Bryan!! Much appreciated.
