Should I buy it or not?
« on: September 01, 2007, 08:27:48 PM »
Hey guys,

I found someone selling a 1978 CB750F for $400.

Details:

Does not start but turns over smoothly and sounds good.  I've been told it just doesn't have spark.

I feel i could fix it relatively easy (i'm am a light duty mechanic) .
Looks relatively complete, but isn't very pretty.

Kicker:  Hasn't been registered since 2004 and was not put in "Planned Non-Operation"...and I'm in California!

What you guys think?  Worth it?

Thanks again!

I'm figuring the fee's will be around $200

I just picked up a '76 CB750K in Juneau, Alaska for 200 bucks.  Didn't run, nothing electric worked (kinda need fuses...), but I got it to turn over about 30 mins after I had it home.  Now it's in various stages of complete dis-assembly.

Go for it.

Thanks for your opinion there Spicy.

Anyone else have an opinion?  Specially considerign the registration not being paid since 2004?  Does anyone know how much it would be?

Thanks

Not sure how that California Designation thing works, but I say it's worth it.

For those not familiar with Cali's Planned Non-Operation SCAM, you pay a fee to NOT register for the year. If you skip the fee they assume you are riding without registration. Fees and penalties MULTIPLY. Without the 'Planned Non-Op' you are looking at a F%&*ING FORTUNE in fees. PNO is probably the biggest ripoff ever to come out of Sacramento. It might be worth losing the paper and getting a new title and a Maine plate from one of those 'title service' outfits. Failing that, have a cousin in Oregon license it for you. Ride around for a couple years with one of our pretty yellow plates and save a bundle. My 550 hadn't been tagged since '05 - transfer and an '09 sticker cost $80

Happy trails.

{edit} Just for giggles, call DMV and find out what they want for a sticker.

My guess - $800

Good luck.

Well normally you go for it. However a word of warning. I sold my 75 CB 750K. The one you see in the Avatar... The only reason I did that was because I very specifically wanted to work a 78 F.  I just perfer some of the 78 F cosmetics, Comstar wheels, dual disk up front.... Little did I know what I was getting into... The 78 F is kind of a bastard engine with some very unique oddites that make it very difficult to replace certain upper end engine parts.

That engine has done nothing but kick me since I got it.

Didn't register my bike for ten years in Ca. it only cost me that years registration and a title search .  I think after so many years it gets taken off or dropped from the DMV files. I would go for it.

My recent conversations with DMV employees here in California has also indicated that after about 10 years of non-registration a vehicle gets deleted from their files. To re-register I've been told to bring the bike down there so that they can verify the frame number and then issue a new title and registration. They assured me that there wouldn't be any penalities; just standard fees for title, plates, registration. I'm guessing I'll get out of there for less than $150.

If your bike has expired tags but is still in their computer without a non-op on file, yeah, you're going to pay some penalties. However, $800 sounds ridiculous. I've paid penalties on cars in the past that hadn't been registered in a few years, and seem to remember paying about $100 in penalties. An old motorcycle would be even less I would think.

However, my information is about as worthless as anyone else's since we're all just guessing. Call the DMV!

Yeah i didn't get it.

Firts i told the guy never mind because i just registered a vehicle recently which had the tags expired since 2004 and it was $270.  THAT happened because i DID put it in pLanned NON- Operation in 2003, yet recieved a "renewal invitation" in the mail that looks EXACTLY like a bill (it is kind of) but had a "do nothing to to leave vehcile in non-op status" hidden all too well...guess what happened?  My grandmother saw the "bill" and sent it in, which REMOVED the planned non-op status and we received zero notifications informing we needed to smog the car (which we would have figured out it wasn't in planned non-op anymore).

Didn't find this out til about a month ago...therfore...registration was delinquint since 2004...Thanks DMV.

I swear, if you like buying vehciles for the hobby and selling them once in a while and you live in California; you gotta become more knowledgeable then a DMV employee!

Anyway, i didn't get it, he sold it.
