Gauge face scans...
« on: August 12, 2007, 11:50:57 PM »
Does any one have any quality gauge face scans of a 76 550k or similar face? Maybe a photoshop/illustrator file? I don't know exactly what years but I'm pretty sure that the same face was used for quite a few years and models. Going to customize them for the cafe. Thanks in advance.

Loosely along the same subject, what's the process for doing custom gauge faces?

Check with Tom from www.anubiscycle.com
He has several different types of quality vinyl faces for different years of CB's. He also has some custom ones for the Cafe type scooters. His website shows some really nice pictures.

Thanks for the link but I really want to do my own. Besides thats where the fun is.... and aggravation. I guess I'm going to have to scan mine?

Some ways come up when you search for "gauge face" and they do not seem that complicated. Well I sure hope not...

FWIW, I ordered a pair of gauge faces (and paid) from Anubiscycle three weeks ago. Called last week and was told they'd be shipped. Today still nothing and they don't answer the phone.

I manage a sign shop and can do these for you with your custom art (or your idea and I'll do the art).  Send me a PM or email your art.  I can scan and create the file from the gauges I have, but I'd need to know what type you have with a measurement and preferably a picture to confirm what you have so you get the right size and scale.  I'd send you a proof back to make sure the final image is what you want.

Checkered flags, club logos, nekkid Vargas girls, Giger aliens, whatever. I could see this being really cool.

I really like the idea of the custom gauges Anubiscycle has, but having you own design on it would be even better. I've seen a lot of those classic gauges on Ducati an MV Augusta racers, and those just look so much better than ours. I can't find the exact one I saw earlier, but this one is pretty goodlooking I think.

But instead of "veglia" or "honda" I would put a small Yoshimura logo on it....

FWIW - I think the way to do it is scan, then find a drawing programme that will let you use layers - put the scan on screen as a "transparent" then draw around it  to turn it into a vector and customise it as you want.  Hard part is scaling and finding a good media to print on.

Hey dustyc, most definitely. I will do all the stuff as soon as I can. There are so many ideas, some more appropriate than others....

if anyone ever wanted I could do any vectors of any gauge if I had a scan of it. I might as well put that education to use besides doing rock posters and flyers for really bad clubs ;)

/off topic/
I wouldn't think there was too much of a market for custom faces is there?

If you need more measurements or better ones let me know and thanks for the help. I assumed that all the speedos in the "large" face gauges where the same, but I just noticed that my 550 goes to 120 and the 750 goes to 140. That must mean that the 750 can go 20mph faster ;D

In regards to Anubis, Tom is a good guy and certainly wouldn't rip anyone off...probably busy with the shop but PM him here and I am sure he will get back to you...FWIW he does have some cool faces and I am not sure I would bother making anything new but I am lazy and have far bigger issues with my bike!  ;)

I've got a set of those gauges.  I just have to rip into them so I can take the face off and get an accurate scan.

I've been playing around with how to lay out the dashes for the scales and made these real quick.  I'll have accurate scales once I do the scan.  They could be rotated(and the needle moved so zero is at the bottom, or at the 1 o'clock position with the upper limits at around 10 o'clock.  Can you tell I'm having fun?

Hey folks,

I have the gauge faces scanned for a 750 in basic white if anyone needs them.

They have all the numbers in the correct place and no black borders around the edges.

They could be shrunk up or down and any graphic added.

PM will be sent shortly.  I mocked this up back when Tom was talking about this.  Kinda grown attached to the idea...

For those few who don't know her - it's Bettie Page (or in this case - Bettie Gauge).  I'll need to find a higher quality shot, but I love the "naughty bits" missing because of the cut-outs.

It's risqué without being risqué.  Kinda like me!    8)

I've got the gauges apart, and the faces off.  I'll be scanning and converting them this evening.

As a side note, I used a small sharp chisel to split the ring so there will be the smallest gap possible when I reassemble them.  That worked like a charm.  I'm going to try soldering them rather than epoxy for reassembly.  I'm documenting with pics, so I'll post a "how to" once they're back together.

What's involved in changing the "zero" resting position of the needles?  Do they just need rotated on the shaft?

By the way, the Betty Gauge is cool.  I like the clever "censorship" bars. :)

Hmm... Measuring a metric bike with a ruler in inches?

This tomfoolery has got to quit.

Tomfoolery? I believe that definition goes to a person who runs a front disk with no front brake.

Damn, you're as bad as me staying up too late.  I've got the work part done. Now comes the fun part.  There are too many possibilities.  I've got a bunch of ideas I'm going to make, any other suggestions are invited.

You can just move the needle to where you want it.   Funny, the 2-10 oclock scale looks better to me on that old Italian bike in the shed.  Maybe with a graphic in the background...

That's the truth.  I've got this version done to my liking.  Almost.
