My cb 500 Cafe Project Thread (will get picture heavy)
« on: August 13, 2007, 11:10:32 AM »
So finally I decides to make my own thread about the cb 500/4 and the progress I make.

First I was not sure if I should rebuild the carbs I have or invest in a set in better state. After seeing THIS I decided to kick them into the trash:

After this kind of depressing moment I went to something without tiny screws and orfices:

Some ellbowgrease and 400 grid sand paper later:

Tomorrow I will go for some 600 grid ... at first I thought I will go for mirror polish but I like the brushed look it has now .. hmm will decide tomorrow.

Shoot 'em with Simple Green before you toss 'em.  You might be pleasantly surprised.  There's another thread around here about the best carb cleaners, and I'm pretty sure there were worse sets in that thread.

I just went through my carbs as a first-timer...and if I could bring mine back from thick laquer, bent floats, and broken posts, I know that with your (has to be more and better) experience, you can salvage your carbs.  As long as there's no corrosion and broken pieces and parts, I think you can clean your way back to something that will perform reasonably well.  But I  no authority on the matter!  Good luck.

i like the form  of that seat but the cb550's frame in the back is not flat  so you might run into the way it all runs together. have you thought about makin your own ?

I am thinking the whole day what to do with my project! First I thought the polished aluminium look is what I qill go for but after looking at lots of cafe racer pics I am not sure anymore!
I really love the look of DME's 750 Cafe Racer and I should be capable of stretching my tank the way he did ...

ahh decisions .....

Nothing I would have thought of... but I think the polished aluminum would look killer....where did you get that ?    Are you going to put a polished tank on there as well ?  Can't wait to see that.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

So, the carbs are varnished.  Soak them in carb cleaner.  Be happy the base metal is still there.  When that corrodes away, they are trash, otherwise they are rebuild-able.

starting with a set of carbs from a junk-heap bike, I found that gas line antifreeze (alcohol) will remove varnish and deposits pretty well.

Your carbs do not look any worse than these did.

They should clean up just fine.

Happy trails.

I finished cleaning mine this past winter and they looked similar to yours. I used a dremel tool with a brass (use brass only as its soft metal and will clean the carbs well without gouging the metal).  I used lots of carb cleaner and simple green.  I dissembled each carb (I did one at a time so as not to lose parts) and took plenty of pictures to make sure I was putting everything back together correctly.  Your carbs look salvageable.  Just like Two Tired said, so long as the base metal is there you can clean 'em up and use them again.

Prost!

BTW: Are you familiar with the Muller Fasching Verein in Rum, Austria?

;D Do you know the muffin man, muffin man, muffin man! :D

I love to see the "dual" use items that migrate out of the kitchen for the more important duties!

Also if you have access, a ultrasonic cleaner ( used in Jewelry stores and Gun shops ) with a bit of cleaner and H2O and about 25 min and they are super clean. Much longer than that and they start really cleaning the surface (bad). If you know someone who has one. Borrow and use it for a weekend on all the small parts and you will be amazed. I have done it on several sets of carbs (including bodies!) and the results are mighty fine.

Not steel braided like brake lines but rubber lines with a fabric around it. It's sold as fuel line.

I got a master in chemistry in a former live so I know them quite well but I could not be arsed to buy one (yet). Sometimes I am really tempted to stick some of my motorcycle parts in the dish washer but I am afraid to break it!

I just won 2 different fuel tanks on ebay:

After trying out which one I like the most I will sell the other one. Problem is I just stumbled across third one which is just perfect but much to expensive for my taste:
