They don't shoot them, they have a guy that gets rid of them, he only shoots them as a last resort.

I saw a documentary on UK TV last night, it was quite good.

Oh did I mention,.............................

And you only have to worry about mosquito bites from late June to late July  ;D

Of course, in every other month you have to worry about frostbite...  I dunno about you, but I'd rather have to worry about the mosquito kind.

Okay, I'll try to make this a short story.  A friend worked at Honda of Anchorage.  We were talking on the 800 line one day when I mentioned some dental surgery I was going through.  My friend said" that reminds me, I have to call Dr. Smith"(?) (a dentist who was also a customer of theirs- rode a Wing).  The service writer standing next to my friend said "Don't bother.  He hit a moose with his wing, and the moose won".  Interesting road hazards!

On the other hand, it is very beautiful up there.

Anchorage is not as bad as I thought, but clearly different from what you are use to. I know they can grow some killer veggies up that way, so it can't be too bad.

I used to live in Nome AK.

The good news is Anchorage is warmer than Fairbanks or Nome.

Nome gets its weather off the Bering Sea.

And Fairbanks gets it straight out of the interior and north.

Anchorage like Seattle is still rather temperant by comparison due to the Pacific oceans influence.

Its a fun town and I was always happy to get there from Nome...

Hi Droops, just had a good look at the Adak web site, couldn't make my mind up why anyone would want to live there.
Was you there with the Navy ?

Glad to help, if I can.

Cost of living was spendy, but not much worse than many cities here in the states.  Rent was roughly $1000-1500/month.  Groceries were a bit more expensive, maybe 10-20%.  Expect to pay 10-15 bucks for a burger when you go out to eat  ;)

What killed me was getting out of town.  Juneau to seattle was $400-$500.

To give you an idea about the costs, I was up there on military pay and my additional $ for the cost of living increase was roughly 15-20%.

Have you looked at the cost of living calculator at monster.com yet?  It seemed pretty spot on .

Damn.  6X?  I don't know what you're making right now, but I expect you should do just fine.

It's a whole different world up there, but great.  At least as long as you don't mind the cold and isolation.  It's effing cold up there, visited for a pharmacy conference in February a few times.
