How interchangable are the electronics on these honda bikes?
« on: August 10, 2007, 09:21:41 PM »
As i mentioned in my other thread in here i mentioned the possability of getting ahold of a Honda CR...this one being a CR250R motocross bike. Now the issues with the bike are why its even sitting in the first place..the wiring harness is long gone and i havent been able to source an replacement just yet. Now this leaves me with two options...

1. I fabricate my own harness using factory connectors if i can locate those at least.
2. I adapt the harness from a simular year XR250 or XL250 since they are still avalable through places like bikebandit.

Now im leaning towards option two as it will also allow me to fit lights to the bike and be able to make use of it as more then just a day toy...i would like to go the supermoto route with it as well so option two makes that a little easier as well...i suspect the most i may have to do to adapt a harness from an XR is change a few plugs for the CR parts....Thoughts?

All the CRs have no provision for lights. the CDI ignition is ignition and only ignition. There are places such as "Baja" they offer or offered lighting kits to put lights on vehicles without lamps or you could go your route and use a battery that would be the only source of power for the lights, but when the battery dies you would have no lights till battery recharged...... If you find a used harness off a XL model you could adapt it for your purposes if you want road legal. If you are only looking for headlight & taillight, no brake light, look for XR or even a MR harness (all of these are Honda models) they will give you just the wires you need and you could adapt from there. Personally I would use the cheapest Honda harness I could find and draw out of it just the color coded wires i would need and just run your own harness. You can buy factory style wire connector kits from Kowa tools (www.kowatools.com) look under Diagnostics and than electrical. Kit is expensive for initial purchase, but i have had mine for almost 20years, with all items refillable

thanx for the links and info guys! The main reason im looking at adapting another bikes harness is just that to make the CR road legal so i can ride it out of town to the dirtbike track for example...figured since i have to rewire it might as well make it more capable at the same time...now would the electrosport startor have enough power to charge a battery if i were to go this route?
