Oil quiz/poll (with pics!)
« on: July 09, 2005, 04:02:43 AM »
Would you put this oil in your bike?  I would say a) maybe b) maybe c) no.

I think there's some consensus that API SG and earlier is good, but does the fact that these say both SG and SL override that?

New fun with an old thread....

JASO MA rating is a signal of good bike oil, but oil companies selling to the US market may not bother to get a Japanese test done to have that label even though it's excellent oil and would pass the tests.
I'd use the first 2 oils (assuming the viscosity is right), but pass on the "energy conserving" stuff.

Definately not C.

a and b I might use if no other oil was available and I had to have some.  Or, if other labeling stated motorcycle use conditions.  I would also change it as soon as I found the correct stuff.  But, the API rating alone does not give me confidence, as it's current applicability is now for automotive use and is motorcycle indifferent.

Pretty good summary here:

A. If nothing else was around, sure.
B. If only A and B were around, then it would be my pick. CF designation makes it the winner with the additional protection/performance such an oil would supply.
C. No.

Top pick if someone else was paying would be M1 MX4T 10w-40. Great base oil along with a great additive package.
My pick is a good 15w-40. Of course, they're not tested for JASO MA approval, but Allison C-4 and Caterpillar TO-2 work for me.
