Tire trouble??
« on: August 16, 2007, 10:22:03 AM »
I had to replace my tube on the front of my 400f front tire, and I can get the tire to seat, except one edge.

I've been trying to fix this for quite sometime now, and this explains my 1.5mm side wobble. At first, I thought it was my rim, but upon closer examination
it was my tire.

I've soaked the entire rim and even inflated the tire to 65psi.

I thought of taking a clamp, the kind you use when wood working and inflate the tire to 28psi and squeeze the tire where it won't seat.

Is this a bad idea?? Would using pure soap and not soap and water work better?? I know WD40 is out of the question. That's a NO brainer!!

Trying to fix this by today as Friday and Saturday are going to be 71 and 74 degrees.

Help :(

Could it be the tube that's not pushing the bead in that specific spot?

You might have damaged the bead on the tire or could just be stubborn, it happens. Break it down off the bead again and inspect the tire and the rim. Apply a lubricant of your choice ( I use dish soap but I may not use this anymore my rim was fairly rusty in only 2 years) and bounce tire on the floor to help seat it as you inflate.

If there's any rust on the rim remove it and clean the tire bead both sides. Ask your local tire shop for a smidge of tire lube, a latex product, it's great stuff. Apply some of that. As was mentioned with 10lbs of air bounce the wheel around its circumference before you inflate all the way.

Here's what I know. I had State 8 in Akron put my New Kenda sport challenge tire on. I purchased a tube from Chen Ching while I was there.

The box said 100/90 - 110/90, so I said I need a 90/90. He calls the company and they say it should be fine. It's only 1 size larger.

I'm thinking at this point the tube is playing some sort of role thats keeping this one edge from seating. I would think it would cause multiple beads not to seat but it isn't.

Any thoughts?? Is this clamping idea sound good?? I can get small scooter and moped tires to seat, but never my motorcycles tires.

There is no damage to the tire, unless, while they were installing it, they bent a small area of the bead.

I honestly I can't tell. I can't tell what a bead looks like when bent nor have I ever came across one.

Lastly, the tire is set with the companies yellow dot on the side of the tire, exactly aligned with the tire valve. If this would help.

Thanks in advance for any further help

I'm sorry... this has nothing to do with your problem, but whenever I read your posts it's like Nepoleon Dynamite is narrating. It's freaking hilarious. Sorry... Hope you solve your tire problem.

Loops, any chance you can post a pic of the offending area? It might help.

Shoooooot! I knew somebody was going to say "post a pic".

Bad thing is, my camera does not have a macro feature, so I'll have to borrow my sisters. By tonight around 10:35 I should be able to post a pic.

And Tvag, this is the third time someone has said this. Go ahead and humiliate me :D :D ;D ;D ;D
I'm thinking of changing my avatar............ ::)

Stay tuned and thanks for the help

A trick I learned when workuing split-rim truck tires.  Check all these thing other members have suggested-bead damage, tire damage...  Lube it(dishwashing liquid is fine) and inflate it.  If it doesn't seat(you were on the right track) put 60-80 lbs in.  You can try bouncing the tire like a basketball, but I've found smacking it square on the tread with a hammer in the area of the problem.  It should pop right in.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Was your tire designed to install on your narrow rims?

Hi,
Just got back home. I was going to get up tomorrow morning to try the suggestions you guys have mentioned, but it looks like I will be visiting my grandmother.
She has lung cancer, and her treatment hasn't worked.

I will get back as soon as possible as I would like to fix this annoying problem.

And to answer TT's question, CB400F's take a 90/90 originally, and that's what I put, Kenda 90/90-18". Is there something else I'm missing??
