part number wanted - ignition key & plug - 1978 750F
« on: August 12, 2007, 02:40:33 AM »
Just out of curiosity, I was wondering if anyone had the part number for the ignition key assembly and plug from the harness for a 78F. I know I mentioned before that parts and more don't make a replacement and i went looking for the number to try and find one that might use the same number and I can't find it in my usual place.

thanks :)

You wont get the harness plug seperate from a harness and the ignition switch comes as a set with the seat lock unless you buy aftermarket

Just by using one of the online sites the part number is 35010-393-771 cost $169.89 (if its available) and it fits:-
77/78 550
77/78 750 A,F,K
79 650 and 750K

which probaly means just the electrical switch part is available pattern from Dennis Kirk, BUT as I said the harness plug is just not available AND its an odd shape/size such that nobody else makes one

Dennis kirk, switch part number 200725 $28 ish, and repair kit (electrical bit so you keep the same key) 200724 $10ish.

Steve: is it worth putting these numbers in the FAQ as the question is asked regularly

servicehonda shows the switch for around $93 I think but that doesn't necessarily mean they have it. I looked last week.

They don't list the 78F in the fitment section on denniskirk. It looks right, but I checked denniskirk before I posted.

I'd stay away from the Emgo switch at DK. Read about my Emgo switch here...http://www.sohc4.us/forums/index.php?topic=24801.0

Dennis Kirk dont, but if you go to

http://www.motogrid.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/7/default.aspx

and put the part number into the search on the RH side it tells you what Honda says it fits!

Also the emgo is no worse than the genuine Honda, the electrical part falls off all of them if stressed a little too much

wow. 169 bucks. I can't sink this kind of money into this damn bike! I just paid 55 bucks for a headlight bucket and that was purely because I was sick of being over bid on the damn thing for a year. A year later and an ungodly amount of money... and the valves are eventually going out. This is PURE insanity. I might have to hang up my sohc shoes soon.

So, there really is no way to fix an ignition that only works when you wiggle it besides replacing the whole damn thing?

I can't agree with you on Emgo being equal to Honda in my experience Bryan. If you read the link in my previous post you'll see that the Emgo fell apart in my hands while I was installing it. The very act of sliding the connector block onto the switch caused me to have two parts in my hands. The bottom switch section of the Emgo slides in and out of the main body of the ignition so easy it's pitiful. If installed I think a good sized bump in the road could cause it to fall out. They should be ashamed to sell something so poorly made. My original Honda switch...I don't think I could get the bottom to separate from the top without damaging it. Also, the simple act of turning the key feels much more solid in the Honda switch. I'll epoxy this Emgo together and keep it as a spare...but I won't have any confidence in it as a long term solution.

Mike, Emgo may well have got worse over the years but back 'round '77 they were a BIG supplier of most service items and I can Honesly say that we sent very little back---less percentage than genuine in fact.
Honda did, at one time, supply just the electrical part BUT you only find it on some of the parts list and the 750 isnt one of them. trythe 500 twin, 400 four, CBX 1000 and GL 1000 as they all use the same switch.
Also that $169 is a vast REDUCTION in price ( which usually means it has been obsoleted) as teh last UK price was £250 (approx $500)

Parts-N-More shows an ignition switch assembly for $22 and a repair kit for $12 on their web site.  Check https://www.partsnmore.com/cat_index.php?model=cb750_sohc&category=electrical.  Their description shows that it fits the '78F.

I purchased Dennis Kirk part number 20-0724 (for only $8.99) to replace the broken bottom of my ignition on my '77 CB750F.  It fit in there perfectly, and has been working for over 2 months, and 2,000 miles.  The only thing that is a little wonky about it, is that where the key "clicks into place" does not exactly line up with the engraved "Off, On, and P".  However, it does work.  The fork lock also still works.  Just a suggestion.  For $8.99 it is worth a try.

I ordered one today along with a bunch of other crap. I really hope it works.

Also, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the stock headlight bucket on the 78F and didn't have the fork ears. I finally got that damn bucket and the after market headlight ears I was using for my other headlight just aren't long enough. This could be problematic in regards to this switch as well because the bucket butts right up to that switch. So, if anyone has the measurements for those fork ears on the 78F or knows of a pair of aftermarket ears that are long enough i would love to hear about it. I'm currently bidding on a set on stealbay and I'm sure I'm battling with someone here!

well, I ordered one from denniskirk. I had no idea partsnmore took so long to ship.

I ordered up the repair part and the whole switch.

Mick750F- I know you had a bad experience with the repair kit, so I will definitely keep you updated on my experiences with that same part and the whole switch.

My problem wasn't with the repair kit...I thank my lucky stars that I didn't get the kit and tear apart my good Honda switch, it was with the POS Emgo switch assembly. Fortunately for me I misdiagnosed my problem so the original Honda switch is back in the bike. The Emgo is now a last resort spare. I'm curious to hear if the switch you get is as poorly made as the one I got. Keep us posted.

ok, so I've gone through and read some old posts on here and it appears some people have taken apart the switch and cleaned the contacts? I was looking through the service manual that I got from here and I did not see anything other than the older ignition style noted. I was wondering if anyone had any instructions on removal of the switch and disassembling the switch. On the hondaparts direct fiche it only shows the switch whole and nothing else.

Hopefully I will shut up about this and stop annoying the board like I seem to do with ALL of my stupid questions. ;)

Well, I put in the WHOLE switch and it's working. Blasted around the city for a while and no problems. Doesn't seem too bad so far. It clicks in and feels fairly solid. I tried to pop in the repair kit into the bottom of my original honda piece and it simply would not go. I'm going to use this switch for now and when I'm feeling motivated (or I finally get the correct headlight ears) I will try and get the old one repaired. Long term- I'll keep you updated Mick.
