Should I ? 2 old Honda's
« on: August 13, 2007, 08:23:21 PM »
I got a call about two old bike's, so I went and had a look. I don't know much about the pre 70's stuff, the best I can tell, they appear to be  a matching set of "64 or 65" 305's a scrambler and a dream. They are rough but mostly complete the seats are ate up on both, the scrambler is missing one side cover and the tank badges. They both have chrome tanks with the black knee pads.

The titles are lost, I can get them both for $200.What do you think?

I should add, I am very interested in the scrabbler but the dream would need to go, so if you are in need of dream parts let me know.

     Mark,
Even without seeing them, I'd say GO FOR IT!! That's about what I gave for a 62' CL72 (250) Scrambler a little while back. Mostly complete, Missing Badges and levers (had the perches though). Motor is stuck, gas tank is pretty thin and seat cover is shot. Got a clear title. That Scrambler was a pretty good runner, in it's day and could be again. Check ebay and also honda305.com

Hahnda has a CA77 Dream and some other stuff, check him out.

I bet you could part out the CA77 for at least 3 times what both would cost you. I'd do it in a heart beat.

Jump on them.
The scrambler was the best of the 250/305 bikes, it's fairly rare and commands a premium price. The exhaust is a problem to replace though, pretty much unobtanium at any price so hope that the headers at least are salvageable. Those original badges would get more than $200.00 alone on ebay, too bad they're gone... you can get repro ones for a fair price though.
The engines are quite different between CB/CL models and the CA/CS/C ones so make sure you have a CB or CL engine in the CL, they can be interchanged (I've seen it a few times) and a CL with a C or hybrid engine is pretty worthless. All CB and CL engines I've seen have the TYPE I ignition and a 180 degree crank, it's possible to put a dual carb CB head on a 360 degree crank C block - using the C cam - but the big breather tower behind the cylinders gives it away.
The dream bikes ahve a good sized following and you should be able to get two hundred for a running bike in any condition, possibly more parting it out. If the badges are original and in good shape they are worth a few bucks - dream ones go for less than super sport ones but are still rare.

thanks guys, I talked to the guy today, I will go get some pics and I will most likely take both. Although he said, he thought the scrambler was a 62 or 63 and a 165? does this sound right? either way the scrambler is cool and I want to get it.

The only thing I can confirm at this point on the scrambler is it has a very large second sprocket, it has a chrome tank, there is something up with the exhaust it looks as if some one has modified super hawk exhaust to run down the same side like the scrambler exhaust, there is no heat shield. I will go have a look tomorrow and take the camera

Never heard of a 165. As far as I know, back then, the CL72 (250) & the CL77 (305) were the main ones. Now, about the mid 60's (I think), there was a CL160. Could be, he's a bit off on the years.

They are both very cool, I will try get pics this weekend but I will leave the bikes where they are at for now, My dad is renting the storage building where they were left ;)

They all kinda look the same, this one has a very large second sprocket, pick below does not.

The chain was on the right side on those bikes. I had a 305 Scrambler back in the early 70's.

So it's been like almost a week and there's probably a whole bunch of folks out there wondering why they aren't seeing 'masonrymans scrambler build thread' or some such.

I'd jump on it myself if I didn't already have 4 cars, a CB550, 5 trucks, 2 boats, a slot machine, and 7 pinballs to deal with.

Happy trails.

I have crap to build everwhere ??? too, 3 old Ford trucks 53-56 a 48 1 ton dump truck and 4 bikes, well now 6 bikes not to mention the house I live in was built in 1875 so it will never be done.

I have taken the bikes we will be moving some stuff soon so I will geting some pics but the bikes will be stored with some of the other projects till the 550 hits the road or none of the above will ever get done.

Dad has had a resto - body shop for 35 years, this why I have so many projects, I will not even try to list the stuff he has stuffed away. The body shop is in a rual area, it consists of 6 acres and 5 buildings.

Mark,  You and your Dad sound like MY kind of people!
Sounds like I'd fit in real well, since I've got a number of projects myself. ;D ::)
