Minor Question - 750 Tappet Covers

Whenever I had occasion to remove the tappet covers, I always returned them to the same locations with the exception of one set. Many years ago I found one had a hairline crack so I swapped it with its mate so the cracked one was at the rear and higher.

Anyway, I had them off today and noticed some stamping inside which I never noticed before. One had a "1" and on the other side, an "F." I thought, hmm, are these position and cylinder specific rather than interchangeable? Another had a "4" and "F" so I thought I was on to something. Well, it didn't pan out that way, I have some multiples with same markings and two with none. Are these interchangeable, or are they specific to location and cylinder and I just don't have a correct set?

I think there are support groups for O/C disorder........ ;)

Seriously though, I have noticed that too. I however do not have an idea why thier marked as such. Perhaps some sort of factory / casting code?

I just stick them in whatever hole is closest, and try to keep the ones I've rounded off out of sight.

Hey Bob!

I got a set of replacements for $22.00 (Buy it now) from Georgefix on E-Bay.  I took one of the new ones to Motion Industries here in good ole Irondale, AL, and found some nice rubber o-rings that fit.  They cost me all of $1.50 for 10.  I have the part # if anyone is interested, and if you don't have a Motion Industries warehouse close by, let me know, and I'll score some more.

PS, if you find a good support group for that o/c disorder, let me know, I've got a wife and sister-in-law to sign up. ;D

The number inside was probably indicating what cavity number they came out of from the die they were cast in. This is pretty common in both the die casting and injection molding industries. It's helpful in troubleshooting production issues in "family" (multi-cavity) tools.

If you need a stock one I can post you one or two, I got a box of them, I've also got a set of new finned aftermarket ones you can have for $20.

I know some things are best kept in order but I have never kept my tappet covers in order. All they are is a cover and thus should be swapable. Thats how I look at it!

I never noticed anything diffenent between the caps or the openings myself, but thought maybe I had overlooked something.

I think people get too carried away with keeping simple things in order. I know people who keep lugnuts for their cars in an exact order. I understand torqueing them in a certain way but if you have to worry about such a trivial things as the order of your lugnuts, you have bigger problems!

so there are tappet hole covers minus o-rings on the market?  do post info on the rings, but, aren't the covers commonly available with rings, too?  (one of the items on my list i haven't gotten to).

oh, and are the tappet hole covers identical for all SOHC models?  true/false?

David Silver supplies them, all same part number - without the O rings. But I guess you all just Knew he would!
