Need To Ship A Motor
« on: August 16, 2007, 09:36:19 AM »

                   Looks like I'm picking up a 68' CB350 motor, that's gonna
have to be shipped. Anyone done this before? Seems like someone
once mentioned strapping  a motor to a small pallet to ship with a
company like DHL (when I was previously talking about shipping a
CB77 motor, which has been put on a temp hold). Any input would
      be appreciated. ;)

                                     Later on, Bill :) ;)

I've shipped a couple of large items.

A type IV VW engine and a CL450.

I went through a shipping broker who found the best deal for me. The engine cost me around 100 bucks, the motorcycle about 200.

Don't go big name shipper, it's usually a lot higher in cost.

I don't have the info anymore, but I'll see if I can dig it up.

To add, ship from hub to hub and pick it up yourself. Home delivery is usally not an option with many companies or it's doubles the price.

Hey Bill
I had a Mercedes automatic transmission shipped via DHL from California to Missouri, they got it here in 4 days and even unloaded it and set it down where I wanted inside the barn. Well worth the $120 shipping fee. ;)

Strap it to something solid.  Ricepaddy.com sent me a complete engine in a cardboard box, all 150 pounds of it.  Why even bother with a box?  It showed up with several cooling fins broken off the oil pan, filter housing and head.  They've decided to stop returning my emails now.

That was was just plain dumbass on their part. You would think they would have known better being in the bike business and all. It should have been skidded and crated.

Their reply was that the additional weight of the skid would have put it into "freight" category...thus higher shipping cost.  They had to know the thing would get damaged like this.  I would have liked to at least have the option to pay more and get the engine in one piece.

I saw them listed under "bad folks" on the feedback page here, but the engine was cheap enough to tempt me.  Can't say I'm too impressed so far.  I just sent them another email after 3 weeks of no response.  We'll see.

I have shipped several heavy or odd shaped items, I have quit buying boxes for the larger stuff. Boxes are expensive if bought individual and in specific sizes.

For just odd or large shaped items i make my own boxes out of Masonite paneling and nylon reinforced strapping tape, and then wrap it in the brown shipping paper. Some shippers ( ups ) charge a Sir charge if items are shipped in something other than cardboard.

I have shipped a few car engines using the same method, first making a crate and a frame out of what ever lumber I had laying around then cover it with the Masonite and tape the seams.

Even if all of the items are bought; 1 x 4's or 2 x 4's, Masonite, screws and tape the box should not cost over 20 bucks, I don't think the shippers treat a wood box as rough as they would a card board box just because it will break.
