I was a little bit bad...
« on: August 20, 2007, 06:43:04 PM »
I pulled up right behind one of the local biker gang on his Harley at a light.  Don't know the model.  Is there a Sportser with a big (1000 or 1200 cc) engine?  The light goes green, I pull out from behind him into the lane next to him.  He takes off up the street.

I don't know what posessed me.  I decided to give my tired old stock K8 full throttle.  In third I passed and SMOKED him.   :o  In fourth I just kept on widening the gap until I had to slow down for my turn off.   ;D

I didn't know my tired old 750Four would do that.  If it had been my modern bike, I wouldn't have been the least surprised.  But my mild old Honda just burned this guy, and he was trying not to get passed.

I shouldn't do it again, but it was pretty cool.

That same thing has happened to me a few times. The HD will take you out of the hole with those bucket sized pistons putting out low end torque. His torque falls off at 4K which is where ours kicks in. He has to shift around 4k and while he is shifting you are still pulling. In third  you can just out wind him. I usually open my visor at the next light and say to the the guy, "really nice bike". When you say that they don't know if they should sh*t or go blind.

There's a reason why they don't compete against jap bikes.  It's because they can't.  I recently saw a show on Discovery on Daytona and Harleys.  First, whenever they do a show on Daytona, they never mention racing.  They only talk about the stupidity in town.  There is racing EVERY DAY at the track during bike week.

So on this show, when they finally got to racing, it wasn't about anything at Daytona, it was about drag racing.  Specifically about Harleys factory sponsored bike, calling it the fastest factory sponsored drag racer.  Technically that is correct because the japanese factories don't sponsor any drag racers.  And I think we all know the japanese bikes are quicker and faster than any Harley.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

In 1975, I pitted my 74 CB550 Honda against a stripped down but full sized harley touted to be bored and stroked with a 3/4 race cam.
I did a hole shot on him at the count down from three, for about a front wheel length, each gear thereafter gained distance out front.  At 80 MPH I was two or three lengths out front and figured he would then catch up and pass, but he quit and went back to the barn.  He also stopped teasing me about my "little scooter bike", and never asked for a rematch.
I've no doubt a 750 would have left him quite dusty.

I to am surprised that you were surprised. HD makes "some" good looking bikes but none that really run good as bought stock "IMHO". The only HD I ever saw that I thought would really run good was a factory road race bike I saw at a bike shop in south east Ohio, but it wasn't even close to being street legal and was $16,000, and that was in 1976. HD couldn't even compete with the British 650 twins much less a little "rice burner". Have you ever thought how fast your 750 would run if you put as much money into it as that average HD cost. Better hang on tight.  ;D ;D

Well I admit I enjoyed my 10 seconds of street glory on a 30 year old stock SOHC.

And at my age... :D

If your out to slay a harley you probably don't have to finish your project, but keep it fair and pull 2 plug wires. Yea, I know I shouldn't have said this, but a lot of HD riders really look down on our bikes big time.

Hey Scott,

That this bike even runs is partly to your credit!  Are you coming down for the balloon fest?

**Warning**

Don't try this with just *any* cruiser...

The Rocket III may look like a Brit Harley but it's faster to the ton than an R1 !!

(us Sprint owners may "graduate" to one of these when too old and stiff to climb aboard - at least that's what my local Triumph dealer keeps telling me)

I probably would have wheelied the Sprint!, and lost it.

Now, I'd like to get that old relic Trident running so I can compare it to the 750Four.  ;D

I just discovered there's a wrecking yard in ABQ near where I get parts for the Honda, who has parts and does machine work for old Brit bikes.  I just need time and $$$.

medic09,

Still seeing if the Fiesta 07 will be attended this year. If I do I will let you know. I think I figured a way to trailer both the hot air balloon and the Super Sport at the same time. I have to find something to do with the rest of my day!  :D
