Glass pack: What problems will surface out??
« on: August 21, 2007, 12:15:36 AM »
I am having very loud exhaust, so i intend to reduce the sound.

1) What are the noticeable problems will surface if glass pack is install into the exhaust?
2) Will I need to re-balance my carbs?
3) What is backblast?
4) Do you pack the glass pack, piece by piece in a stacking manner or do I roll it like a swissroll and push the thing into the exhaust?
5) How long will the glass pack last? Any maintenance for the glass pack?
6) What is the different, when I pack more or pack less glass pack?
7) How do i achieve the sound that I want? What kind of sound will come?

I sure like some sound advice on this topic, althought it has been posted before. Where I stay is not common to customise bike.

It makes it a bit quieter and doesn't last forever. You wrap it around the core w/ wire and shove it in the muffler can. Note it doesn't go inside the inner outlet and doesn't completely plug up the exhaust. If you want the most effective power and noise sound-adjustment, go w/ a Supertrapp which is infinately adjustable and doesn't deteriorate.

Well, I can't answer all of your questions, but I can answer a few.

1) What are the noticeable problems will surface if glass pack is install into the exhaust?
Are you just planning on putting a glass pack baffle into an existing pipe? If so, make sure that pipe was designed to have a baffle of some kind first, otherwise it will screw things up.

2) Will I need to re-balance my carbs?
Possibly. You are changing the back pressure on the exhaust, so that could effect the set up.

4) Do you pack the glass pack, piece by piece in a stacking manner or do I roll it like a swissroll and push the thing into the exhaust?
I have heard that both methods work. I've had one tech tell my to pack the glass as tight as I can get it, and another tell my to keep it loose. The exhaust on my Ducati came rolled tight from factory. Next time that I repack it (which should have been last spring), I'm going to try something a little different.

5) How long will the glass pack last? Any maintenance for the glass pack?
How long it lasts really depends on the bike, how the bike is run, and many other factors. No way, really, that I know of, to maintain it other than re-packing.

Well, those are the ones I have answers to. Anyone else?

Repeating that you can't just pack glass wool into an open pipe, if it doesn't just blow out you'll have a plugged exhaust and lots of problems. If there's a perforated baffle tube that's removable it can be wrapped with glass wool matting and tied with wire - if it will go back in with the wrapping of course.
I would second the Supertrapp idea, the universal ones look OK. These are glass-pak mufflers with a diffuser disc system at the outlet. You can tune the sound and back pressure by adjusting the glass packing and the number of discs. The sound is pretty nice.

If that's your bike in the avatar, i'm not so sure those pipes have a removable baffle. Check the back of the muffler and see if there are screws.

If you do have a removable baffle, it's simply a matter of taking it out and wrapping the glass around it as tight as you can. Wrapping a lot of material around it would make it more silent, but you're limited by the diameter of the muffler.
The glass packing comes in two types, loose and as a mat. The loose stuff is intended for closed baffles and not suitable. The mats are what you need. You can buy it at most motocross shops.
You'll also need some stainlessteel wire to fasten the glass.
The time it lasts depends on how good you packed it. The material doesn't burn up, but any loose material will eventualy get blown out.
My glasspacking in a 4-1 pipe lasted 15.000 miles so far.
