If anyone has read my previous posts I just had my carbs rebuilt.  The job was expensive and it seems there are lingering issues with the rebuild( ie. the carbs leak, but not out of that little tube)  I have decided to just attempt to go through the bike to see if there are any other issues and then revisit the carbs.  Right now it runs ok but has trouble taking off at under 2200-2500rpm and does not have a whole lot of nut.

I have a few questions....

1)what tool do I use to gap my valves?
2) should I check my chain while I am looking at the valves.
3) Is bench syncing my carbs effective enough to make sure the engine is ok( I know its not the best)
4) The mechanic that I took the bike to put plugs with resistors on them... should I change them out before doing any of the other tune up stuff?
5) Is there anything else I should be looking at before I hit the carbs again? Or should I hit the carbs first?

Any information is great...

Thanks,

Scott

Hey Scott,

1)what tool do I use to gap my valves?"

Motion Pro or your Honda dealer sell a valve clearance tool - feeler gauges -  bent at each end - one end has 0.002 (intake) and other end has 0.003 (exhaust) -they also have 0.004/0.005 (use the 0.004 to make sure the gap is not too wide). You can also use feeler gauges bought at any auto store as long as they have the correct size gauge (see the above numbers).

2) should I check my chain while I am looking at the valves.

Camchain? Yes thats part of the tune up. Take off your points cover (lowe right hand side) - use a large wrench to rotate the engine (clockwise) to 15 degrees past TDC at the 1-4 marks on your timing plate - there is a small gap for you to look through to see the marks on the timing plate - your manual will also show a picture of this. Once at the correct position look at the back of your engine and you will see the camchain adjuster and locknut (refer to manual for pic) - loosen locknut, loosen adjuster nut and then retighten. Thats the camchain set (unless its stuck in which case you use a screwdriver to push gently on it through the back of the adjuster unit).

3) Is bench syncing my carbs effective enough to make sure the engine is ok( I know its not the best)

If done correctly should be ok for now. You can also check your plugs to make sure all look the same. If one is sooty and the other white you know you are running unevenly.

4) The mechanic that I took the bike to put plugs with resistors on them... should I change them out before doing any of the other tune up stuff?

Replace with NGK D8EA non-resistor type (assuming stock coils/caps). Starting with fresh plugs can make all the difference.

5) Is there anything else I should be looking at before I hit the carbs again? Or should I hit the carbs first?

Do the above first and then see how it runs. One thing at a time.

Good luck,
Andy

One thought here . . .If your carbs are still leaking then I would say that you better take care of that problem prior to riding the bike!

Where are they leaking from? That's the only thing that makes me wonder. If it is an over full situation, it should be pouring out the overflow tube. Does it leak only when it's running or all the time (You do shut off the fuel valve when not running, right?) Do you have a cracked float bowl?

It leaks out of the float bowl gasket on the cyl 1 carb.  I think I have to check to see if the tube is clogged...  I always turn the petcock to the off position after riding.  The carb seems to leak a teeny tiny amount while riding and a bit more after being shut off... it is not always consistent in the amount it leaks when shut off...

I just went out and bought all the stuff I need to go through my bike. I bought oil and an oil filter, a feeler gage for the valves, new spark plugs, and a set of tools to do the job.  The only thing I am missing is the ability to check the compression across the cylinders.

I am hoping to get all of this done tonight.

As a side note.  Are the spark plugs supposed to have caps on them or do you just put them in and push the wires directly onto the threaded tops?

If you have stock coils/wires then NO caps are required on your spark plugs.

good luck,
Andy

P.S. For your overflowing carb you might just want to pop the bowl off - easy enough - there is a retainer clip that you push forward and the bowl drops down - you can inspect the condition of the gasket and make sure its not pinching somewhere. After my rebuild my #4 carb leaked from the gasket. Taking the bowl off and then putting it back on again solved my problem. Worth a try. Will also give you a chance for general visual inspection of jets and overflow tube.

Ditto on the reseat the float bowl. They are so moody.

I will try that... the bowl has been removed and put back on quite a few times.. the whole thing was rebuilt... I will check again to see if the float is sticking( that would mean the mechanic did not fix it)....

I am also curious as to the condition of my spark plugs...

Well I changed my plugs and changed my oil.... the oil that was in it looked like it could have been the original oil.... black and nasty....

I was attempting to put my bike on the center stand and managed to drop it(YIPPEE!!!!) in the process I broke my left ring finger.... luckily my driveway is gravel and grass and I have an engine guard.... just my pride and finger were harmed....

only 1 plug looked to be burning right... the other 3 were pretty black but not oily...
