So, what do these multimeter readings mean?
« on: August 23, 2007, 04:12:39 PM »
My '71 cb750 is having some charging issues (surprise surprise)... So, after digging through the electrics FAQ and taking multimeter readings, this is what I've come up with:

The battery is good, fully charged. etc. etc.
There is no charging current. At idle, the multimeter reads ~11.9v and drops when I rev the engine.

Checked for mismatched wires, everything is in order.

Testing the regulator wires I got some odd readings.
After disconnecting the battery, I got 2 ohms resistance between the black regulator wire and the (-) battery lead.
and I got inf. resistance between the white regulator wire and ground.

I haven't gone on to check the rectifier yet, I figured I'd focus on these issues first.

Thanks,
-Ben

The white regulator wire feeds voltage to the field coil.  Which should have about 6.8 ohms resistance.
Persue the cause of no resistance between white and green.  Chase the wires all the way to the alternator.  If you don't find a bad connector or wire, your field coil is likely bad.

Checked the white wire with a multimeter all the way down to where it enters the engine, seems good so far. I need to go and buy an impact driver to get the alternator cover off, hopefully that will work, the screws are a little stripped. Anything I should be aware/wary of when removing the alternator cover?

Thanks,
Ben

Some sort of container on the floor under the cover as a small amount of oil will come out.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.
