Weird Engine Sound Please help
« on: August 23, 2007, 05:06:47 PM »
Well I was out riding the Cb today. Everything was going great. I finally got rid of the high idle issue. anyway after being off the bike for an hour I go to start it up (Kick Start) and it starts making a sound like a scraping sound (High Pitch) as if there was no oil in the chambers. The bike then idles fine and i ride off. After I get home. I let the bike cool off. I go out about an 30min later to start it again to find out what made that noice and now I hear it with every kick of the pedal. Also was having trouble getting the bike to start. I could not get it started the final time trying. I checked the oil level. It was fine. I alway kick the pedal before turn the key and starting to move the oil around. before this issue the bike has been starting on the first or second kick. I'll take any help on this issue

I could be really wrong but a high pitch squeal sounds like.......drum roll..............siezed camshaft or something else quite nasty...............maybe a bit of a look with the tappet covers removed might help pinpoint the squeal ??

type of bike ??

have you checked the camchain for adjustment - but it could well be a bad cam journal...can you check the end caps of the valve cover ? for signs of wear??

Does/did the sound vary with throttle.. in gear/neutral.. clutch in/out.. ?? Pull dipstick and look for metal flakes in oil? :( :'(

In the mean time.. please don't park it next to mine in case whatever yours has is contagious :o

Good luck!

Only hear the sound when the engine is getting kicked over then it last two seconds after the bike is running. I checked for metal flakes in the oil. Nothing clean.

Ok this is getting weird. I got it to start again, no noise and starts on second kick. I did check the camchain last night and it was fine. I alsl looked into the tappet covers and could see that oil was making it to all cylinders. I still dont know what made that noise.

I feel that the kickstart ratchet is sticking on mine as well. I have a steady ratchet sound coming from what seems to be my kick starter.
