Bakelite is back
« on: August 25, 2007, 12:45:01 PM »
This is the stuff that, on older machines, hides the fact that your
distributor has hairline fractures throughout it and consequently
runs like crap for years.
Pictured is an RCA 45-J-2 with bakelite case that I have reconditioned
to the point that it is a component that I run through my
newer (not too new--tube amp) stereo system.

Rides: 75 CB750F, 48 Indian Chief, 67 Triumph TR6, 63Honda CA95
          83 XL600R in CB360 Frame
          3-wheel electric tilting cycle

Boy, this brings back memories. I had a '58 Chevy (ugly as sin, but my first car ::)) and it ran like hell until I figured that one out. Moisture in the cracks. :-\

Gerhed, todays top top top o the line stereo equipment still has tubes.  Stereophiles say it gives the sound a "liquid" quality transisters can't produce.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Wow, I have one of those and I have run it through some of my not too new tube and solid state gear. Tube gear has a distortion that is much different than solid state. I must admit that for everyday use I go solid state. You can get a nice refreshed finish on the Bakelite with some Nu Finish car polish. It shines it  but does not get into the sawdust.
