Anyone ever seen an 8 ball "theme" on an SOHC?
« on: August 26, 2007, 04:29:28 PM »
It's probably cliché, I'm sure it's been done on other bikes. Heck maybe I've even seen it and it stayed in the back of my head, and now I think that it's my idea! I just don't want to steal anyone's idea.

I've definitely seen it on choppers but not cafes.  Do what you want, it doesn't matter what other people think if you think it's cool.

Yeah, some guys sure are touchy, I had a really good idea for an "evil" theme for one of my paint jobs, consisting of a stylised "flying skull".

Anyway, the paint was hardly dry before this group of smelly Harley riders pulled up beside me and threatened to do horrible, horrible things to me if I didn't cover it up right there and then!

They then gave me this card, which read: "HELLS ANGELS and the DEATHHHEAD LOGO ® are trademarks owned by Hells Angels Motorcycle Corporation, registered in the United States and various other countries. Should we find you using any of these we will hunt you down and hurt you."

It's a pity too, although it did look remarkably similar to theirs, it looked really nice on my CB750!  :D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Nope. Never seen an 8 ball on a SOHC. I guess it could work. Beware of strangers bearing pool cues.

Don't ask me why, but I had this crazy notion about a big red MEATBALL.

Happy trails.

Many months ago, I looked at the tailsection of ProTeal's 450 and it reminded me of an eight-ball, so I mocked this up just for fun.  He didn't use it, so its fair game.   ;D

That looks a little like a Rising Sun scheme - guess you could kind of call these bikes kamakazi's, strong engine weak brakes  :D

OK, here's my two cents.  This all came from hot rodders.  They had V-8's so they used the 8 ball for their shift knob to signify they had an 8 cylinder.  Plus, it was kinda cool.  This could all be urban myth but it what I've heard/read and it sounds about right.
8 ball on a bike, kinda cool, kinda not.  A 4 ball scheme might be kinda cool if you like purple (4 ball= 4 cylinders).  Now an 8 ball scheme on a bike with twin SOHC motors, now that would be cool.
Do whatever floats your boat.  That's the way I am.  Not everyone likes my paint schemes but I could care less.

Yup. Also called them necker's knobs. ::) :D Before someone as old as I am calls me out on it, technically, the necker's knob was the matching 8 ball steering knob. ;)

I see how it is... I guess I had seen it somewhere. I remember seeing 8 ball shift knobs. I guess I'll just shoot my bike and throw it in a ditch somewhere...  :(

Like I said, do what makes you happy or you think looks cool.  There's more than one bike on here that definitely isn't my taste but who cares.  We're all on here because we love SOHCs, no matter what it looks like.  I'm sure more than one person thinks I'm an idiot because I started hacking up a perfectly good 75 750F.  To each his own.

I don't think the "4 ball" would have the same "street cred" as the " 8 ball". I think part of the original pre-historic appeal was because the 8 ball is black, so was kind of ominous, and also signified "game over". You know, like, "this is where the bullshiit stops".

Over here in Oz there was a time when the pub owners couldn't keep up with the 8 balls that went missing from the old coin operated pool tables, so they replaced them with a lesser ball to reduce theft, ha ha!

I think people would look at a "4 ball" theme and walk away scratching their heads, not understanding the significence. Just my 2 cents, of course. Cheers, Terry. :D

--My Indian Chief had a yellow "one" ball on the
side shifter when in bought it in L.A.
in 1968.
Thought it was cool so it's still there today.
So you can't use a one ball or I'll come after ya !

Yup, have seen them on bikes, and except for the total copycats taken from magazine pictures, all the rest were unique. A theme is a theme, execution is in the details. Just post pics when your done!

8-ball could look cool - now, can you get whitewalls?  Blue dot on the brake light?  (where did that come from anyway?)

Don't try any green felt seat covers, or fuzzy dice though!   :)

The 8-Ball, like alot of oldschool themes, has been done alot and it's been done most bikes I'm sure. If you like it, do it, because someone else liked it and did it. I combined a couple styles when I custom'd my bike and it doesn't matter who likes it, as long as I do.

Well said!

Heck, look at Fat tired, hard tail choppers. Their a dime a dozen now.
