what could be wrong with this bike
« on: August 27, 2007, 06:05:50 AM »
My buddy wants a cheapy bike....There is a cb550 in the paper that says this.

It stalls if there's no choke
Even with full choke if you give it gas too quickly it stalls

Any Ideas what might be wrong with it.

Sounds like the carbs are dirty.
Granted, you never know until you take it apart........

Ditto what Squid said.  Running with choke would be an indication of an overly lean carb setup.  Dirty carbs with plugged up passages could very well run lean.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

its an 83 cb550

That's a DOHC4.  Likely with CV carbs, very different from earlier CB550s.  Still, a carb cleaning would be my first suspicion.  Perhaps a vacuum leak.  Didn't these have a vacuum operated fuel petcock?

At any rate, it is an "other bikes" category.

 ???

I thought the last 550 was the K3 made in '78...Are you sure it's not a 650 ?, they still made those from 1980 - 1982.

Anyway, I agree with most here that's it's likely to be a carbissue. But it's hard to determine if the rest of the bike is any good if you can't really drive it. I would make a low offer to be on the safe side.
Also check for any missing parts, so you won't have spend a lot of money on new parts.

If it's a '78 550K3, or any other 550 with 4 pipes, take a real good look at the underside off the mufflers and headers. A lot of these are rusted really bad with holes in them, this comes from condensation that builds in the pipes (short rides).
These chrome 4-4 pipes are extremely expensive to replace, and a permanent fix is also difficult.

Other 550 parts that can be expensive or hard to find are: Front- and Rearfenders, lamp-ears, forktubes, sidecovers and tanks. So make sure these are ok.

It looks like a mini version of the late model CB750 DOHC (the one with hydraulic tappets)
