350 Twin reassembly...
« on: August 24, 2007, 02:17:20 PM »
Do you guys use anything to coat the gaskets on reassembly? Seems like the side cover gaskets and such, the material just seems a little flimsy to hold the oil in. That's just my thoughts, any suggestions? I've seen the HG with the copper coating, but what about the others?

I was worried about he same thing. I put a thin coat of Hylomar on each surface.

It's not a 350 twin, but I have never had a leak with any of the side cover, or for that matter, the oil pan gasket on my 750. Mounted them dry.

I think the whole point is to fill the imperfections of the two mating surfaces. The pressure crushes the gasket to fill the form. I know certian gaskets call for it, others dont. I was told on triumphs and hondas coating could be trouble.

I second that. In any case, and following Bryan Jones advice, I just "paint" the gaskets with a brush and regular motor oil. It's a little messy, but my CB350 engine seems to hold the oil tight until now.

My methods are;
head gaskets always totally dry, other gaskets use a thin smear of grease on both surfaces, much the same idea as Raul, it allows the gasket to move easily as you tighten to do its job of sealing, 'O' rings either grease again or a little Hylomar.
