The kids today from the middle class have never been taught or allowed to FEND. Everythng is planned out for them or done for them. My kid is growing up with everything, but he was taught (against my wife's wishes) to do things for himself and figure things out on his own. He is 19 and still needs a bit more seasoning, but he will change a tire, fix a pipe, wire an outlet, change plugs, oil, and brakes. I told her I was raising an adult and not a child. Yeah I also taught him to shoot.
I had the exact same problem with MrsD and our two, when it came time for them to borrow our cars I made them prove to me that they knew the basics, like checking fluids, changing tyres, and, most importantly, leaving fuel in them before I'd let them have access to the keys.
My wife said I was wrong to do that, because if they broke down I would be going out to help them anyway
So I made
her prove that she could do the same, because if she wanted to rear helpless retards, she'd better learn to do the stuff she thinks they don't need too
Both kids have their own cars now, my son (a natural born nosey git) spends all his time under the bonnet of his because he wants to learn how they work. If my daughter (the natural born freeloader) has a problem, my son knows enough now to not only help her out, but
charge her for the work
