Feeling Old?
« on: August 28, 2007, 07:43:55 AM »
Just in case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things.
The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1989.
They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.
Their lifetime has always included AIDS.
The CD was introduced two years before they were born.
They have always had an answering machine.
  They have always had cable.
Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.
Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.
They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.
They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.
They never heard: "Where's the Beef?", "I 'd walk a mile for a Camel," or "de plane Boss, de plane."
McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.
They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter
Do you feel old yet? (Sorry) Pass this on to the other old fogies on your list. Notice the larger type, that's for those of you who have trouble reading.

Save the earth.

Coming this Fall to a television set near you - The Bionic Woman.

Seriously.

But don't expect to get warm, fuzzy feelings.  It's NOT for us GHOF's, it's for the kids.

I've had to explain what records were a couple of times, but this one took the cake.

I'm in the greeting card isle and some young girl is reading a humorous card out loud.  "If Cass Elliot had given the sandwich to Karen Carpenter, they'd both be alive today", and then asked her friend "Is that supposed to be funny?"  Several grey hairs poped out as I explained it to her.

Was flying along the other day...

Chicago center calls: "Traffic at your 2 O'Clock and 10 miles 1000 below converging..."

I key the mike: "looking for the traffic ...no joy"

Chicago Center: "ummm disregard previously issued traffic..its dropped off the scope"

My Reply: "Was it Wonder Woman and her invisible jet?"

Chicago center: "ummm (laughter laughter laughter) roger"

Co-pilot looks at me with a blank stare...and says "what the hell are you talking about"

That led to a whole Linda carter lasso of truth discussion.......

I have a Wonder Woman/Superman joke I told to Christopher Reeve I cannot tell it here. He was my Doctors Son in Law so I would see him in the office from time to time. He was also quite a good pilot.

I think you're all too young to feel old.  That did make me feel a little old though.

What amazes me is how sheltered the college aged kids have been.  I live in a college town and a month ago one of my neighbors(21-22 years old) got a flat tire from some broken glass in the driveway.  His answer was to call for a tow and have his SUV towed to the station less than a mile away to get a new tire.

I gave him the idea of taking it off, taking the wheel to the tire shop in his friend's SUV.  It was a hoot watching them.  Where's the jack?  Where's the spare?  Where do you put the jack?  Can't work the jack. -I showed him that if you turn the attached jack handle(scissor jack) perpendicular to the jack(a foot or so of leverage) it works better than if the handle is straight out(an inch of leverage).  He jacked it up and then proceeded to try to loosen the lugs.  A couple days later I see the flat donut on.  Car doesn't move for a week.  Eventually I see it on a wrecker.

It should have taken 2 hours max to remedy the whole problem.  I'm sure he complained about how much the bill was too.

He'll probably have a great career in management.

The kids today from the middle class have never been taught or allowed to FEND. Everythng is planned out for them or done for them. My kid is growing up with everything, but he was taught (against my wife's wishes) to do things for himself and figure things out on his own. He is 19 and still needs a bit more seasoning, but he will change a tire, fix a pipe, wire an outlet, change plugs, oil, and brakes. I told her I was raising an adult and not a child. Yeah I also taught him to shoot.

Yeah that is all pretty sad. It is not hard to learn basic car work. Jeez if I get a flat, I yank the wheel off and ream out the puncture a little and put in a patch. I have never had a tire leak on the patch. It is just pathetic. No wonder bike shops like new cycles. Most of the people that get them have no idea how to do anything other than fill gas! ???

I've plugged punctures with the tire still on the car.  My oldest son is for the most part relying on his younger brother to fix his stuff.  I guess I didn't rub off enough on the first one.  ::)

Yeah I also taught him to shoot.

I had the exact same problem with MrsD and our two, when it came time for them to borrow our cars I made them prove to me that they knew the basics, like checking fluids, changing tyres, and, most importantly, leaving fuel in them before I'd let them have access to the keys.
My wife said I was wrong to do that, because if they broke down I would be going out to help them anyway ::)

So I made her prove that she could do the same, because if she wanted to rear helpless retards, she'd better learn to do the stuff she thinks they don't need too ;D

Both kids have their own cars now, my son (a natural born nosey git) spends all his time under the bonnet of his because he wants to learn how they work.  If my daughter (the natural born freeloader)  has a problem, my son knows enough now to not only help her out, but charge her for the work ;D

Sadly each day im convinced that my generation is the last of the kids who actually know how to work...i was taught from the moment i could lift a wrench to be able to maintain either a car or bike or atv...hell i know right now if i went out to my truck with the right parts on hand and a few hand tools i could do the plugs, change the valve cover gaskets possably change the wires in the time it takes for one of the kids to even change out half of the plugs on the same engine. but then again my dad had me changing out plugs and doing oil changes since i was about 12...but then again the only reason i take my bike to the shop now is because some of the work being done requires specialty tools..other then that..i would be doing the rest myself..
