$150 paint job??????
« on: August 28, 2007, 11:12:55 AM »
I called Maaco and asked them how much it would be to paint a tank if I brought it in already primed.  They said it would be $150.

If you buy all the supplies listed in this web site (http://www.thegsresources.com/garage/gs_repaint.htm), you'll be out nearly $100 on a spray paint job.  I think I might take my chances with Maaco.  The tank and side covers that I want painted are spares anyway, so I don't think I have much to loose.

Anyone else ever have Maaco paint the tank and side covers?

If I get the tank and side covers painted, I'll definitely post pics for all to see.

Like the link that Hope posted says, the actual spraying of paint isn't all that hard, it's the lack of preperations<sp? that really hurts Macco paint jobs.

And it is the prep that sends the price way up.  I brought tank and side covers to a local body shop.  The manager rides, and sympathizes with what you want for bike.

WITH their prep, the job would be over $500!  WITHOUT their prep, it would still be about $300!

Let us know how Maaco works.

I've had great results with Maaco in the past.... the trick is to do all your prep....
I used to do all my sanding and filling so they would only have to spray the paint....
show up with a 12-pack when you bring your tank and have them put a couple extra coats of clear on it so you can sand and polish  - nobody would ever know that you didn't spend $500 or more......
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

What kind of paint?  Single stage or base coat/clear?  And remember..."There is nothing that cannot be made cheaper and lower quality by someone else. Those people who buy based upon price alone are that person's lawful prey."

Also note that there is not a paint shop on the planet that will guarantee said paint job, unless they do the prep. If the paint lifts or peels or has fisheyes, it was a problem with your work and or materials.

my 2 cents. carry on.

There ya go!
If YOU do the prep- they skate.

I had Earl Schieb do a job once.  They had nice looking re-paints in the parking lot so I thought "What the heck"?  I was so mad when I went to pick up the car, I didn't even ask for my money back.  I just couldn't even speak.  Just drove away.

Needless to say, I will doing all the prep myself.  Here's a pic of the tank:

As you can see, this tank doesn't need any bondo/filler work.  I will only need to prime the tank.  I plan to sand the primer so it is smoooooth.

I used to piddle around my dad's shop when he prepped cars for painting, so I don't think that priming this tank will be especially hard....  but I will ensure that it is a good quality job so that Maaco doesn't blame flaws in their work on my priming.

Prime with a catalysed epoxy primer. The rattle can stuff can craze if it is oversprayed with the wrong paint. Let it cure for 72 hours or more. Don't sand the primer untill right before you take it in so the primer has fresh dust free tooth to it.

Sorry to let you folks down as far as showing you what a Maaco paint job would look like...  I try to be resourceful as far as checking out all of my options and I learned that I can get the inmates at the prison to paint it for free.  I just buy the supplies.

I know it sounds crazaaay to let some inmates paint my tank and side covers, but the inmates did an excellent job on my seat.... and I paid nothing....

When I get my spares painted, I will definitely post pics....  I am very eager to see my new paint job... Now, to pick my color and get some good paint!

If you are willing to wait a while, you might be able to get O.J. to paint it for you. For a few extra $$ he might even autograph it. ;D

aw, c'mon guys....

I am going to take pics of the seat the inmates did for me, and you will see that the quality was very good.  I am optimistic that the paint job will turn out good.

As far as how I am able to get the inmates to paint my tank...  I work for the state of Louisiana (government job), and anyone who is a state employee can submit paperwork for approval to get the inmates to do workfor them in the upholstery shop, automotive shop, and collision repair.

It may be news to all of you, but Louisiana tries to rehabilitate its inmates by teaching them a trade, and some of the inmates learn a trade, then go open their own business because their work is good...

Trust me, when the job is done, I will be posting pics.

Wow, I guess that's one way to keep them busy.

Yeah, but not many people know about it.  The people who work for the department of corrections know about it, but very few state employees outside of the department of corrections knows about it.

I worked for the department of corrections for seven years, which is when I had the motorcycle seat re-done.  Actually they did two seats for me.  Both turned out real nice.  I plan to bring in 2 tanks and 4 side covers...  Just have to decide what color.

I once saw a documentary showing how some airlines -or was it phone companies? canĀ“t remember- hire inmates to work in their call centers.....

No call centers for our inmates in Louisiana... but I think what you're referring to is the fact that some companies actually use inmates to process telephone orders (billing), and they actually take credit card information over the phone.

No thank you.. If someone calls me and wants my credit card number, I tell them to send me a bill in the mail!!!
