Am I the only one who does this?
« on: August 30, 2007, 12:10:09 PM »
My girlfriend was seriously grossed out, because I tasted a drop of the bike's oil at the service station.

Is that weird?

Yes, to the first question.

You may want to listen to her more often. I'm seriously grossed out too.

Yes again to the last question.

I'm tasting for gas, mostly. I had gas-in-oil problems that seem to be working themselves out now that the stock air-box is back on.

Nobody else tastes their oil?

I tasted the deposits on an in-tank fuel strainer once to see if the fuel tank had sugar in it. It did have sugar in it so I was right in my guess. I usually smell oil and rub it between my fingers to detect gas. I have also been known to taste test for antifreeze leaks on occasion. I guess we all have to die of something!

I tasted battery acid once. I didn't know it was battery acid at the time, otherwise I would not have. Fortunetly I wasn't too far from home, so I went home and brushed my teeth right away.

I like the way old motorcycles smell. Except old gas, yuch.

Even more disturbing...you know what gas tastes like? That's kind of like saying you poked yourself in the eye with a stick to see if it felt the same as poking yourself in the eye with a screwdriver.  ;D

Never tasted my oil.  Isn't used motor oil a carcinogin?

Have tasted gas.  A little too slow on the siphon hose.   ;)

Considering the sense of smell is more sensitive than taste, I fail to see the benefit.  I've been known to smell my oil tank to see if there's gas in the oil because I know what gas smells like, but I've never tasted it.

I'm with Gordon on this one.  Smelling the vapor (a known carcinogen) and poisoning your lung alveoli is bad enough.  Tasting/ingesting known carcinogenic liquids is just asking to have your body replaced with another, including a different personality and memory set.

Despite what you may think, you are not indestructible.  Just ask anyone considered old.  They've retained a wisdom about such things.

Good luck!

P.S.
You want gross?  How's this?
When I was eighteen, I was dismantling yet another engine for rebuild that had all the oil and grime a well used, leaky engine in Illinois accumulated after 100,000 miles.  We didn't have a pressure washer.
My hands and, in fact, my entire forearms were black with the stuff.  I had a friend bring McDonalds burger and fries and ate while wrenching.  I could eat the burger with the wraping paper as a shield.  But, the fries...  Well, after downing the fries, my finger tips had no traces of black oily grime.  In fact, they were cleaner than I could get them with any hand cleaner I tried.

I don't know why I still live.  Or, why I didn't even get sick.

The wife loves that story...

not!

Cheers,

After I eat a big Mexican meal I usually small gas the next day. ;D

I prefer drinking the oil directly from the container.  Seriously, you taste your oil?  Wow.

Just a drop, guys. I'm not pouring myself shot glasses of the stuff.
HAVE ANOTHER ONE ON ME!
The whole concept, for the record, started with transmission fluid. There's no way to smell if there are metal shavings in the stuff, and you can't see the stuff caught in the filter w/o taking the filter out, and 1/100th of a cc won't hurt ya. I guess it sounded like a good idea at the time...

All points well taken. Yes, TT, you're right as usual: I shouldn't consider myself indestructible. Aren't liquor, tobacco and marijuana also carcinogens? This might not be the only practice I have to review.

... I hope my girlfriend doesn't find this thread. It'll be: "SEE! You're at least seven standard deviations crazier than the other people crazy enough to want to ride old bikes!"

Are we to understand that trans. fluid with metal bits has a different flavor than fluid without parts? ??? ??? ???

I normally hold the dipstick out in the bright beautiful sunshine and look for that 'metalflake' effect. If it smells bad it probably is..

Used automotive fluids are normally called 'HAZARDOUS WASTE' for storage, transportation, and disposal purposes. Didn't your mommy tell you not to put hazardous waste in your mouth? Did she really need to?

DO NOT PUT HAZARDOUS WASTE IN YOUR MOUTH!

On the other hand.. There could be a career opportunity here. These guys make a fortune.

I've done it at times to determine what my auto was leaking.  Antifreeze is rather tasty   :)

My girlfriend was seriously grossed out, ...

My question.... your future widowed girlfriend.... is she... HOT?  ;)
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.
