Aftermarket 555 cc bore up kit (piston ring issue?)
« on: August 27, 2007, 09:13:25 PM »
I just got my 550 running this past weekend after 2 years of resurection from the dead. I installed the E bay 555 cc kit when
I had the engine out of the frame. The engine seems to be oil fouling
number 3 plug. I know that the rings need time to seat in, but is it
sometimes common for this condition to happen? Or should I worry at this point? The motor has about 50 miles of riding on it.
Hoping this will clear up and I can put some real miles on it. The thing is an absolute blast to ride...TIA   jim

You shouldnt get oil fouling on a re-built engine.
Check the compressions first

And if one peice oil rings are installed upside down they do a fine job of pumping oil upwards. BTDT

I have 3 and 2/3s rings if you happen to need any.  Only 3 top rings.

yeah, and I discovered today that number 3 pipe is spitting oil.
Are one piece oil rings known for problems? I am 99.9 percent
certain I put 'em in with the marks "up".

If your looking for ring sets with the 3 oil ring, these guys have them.  Its where I got mine, no smoking after 2000 miles.

...just what are we talking about when we say "smoking"? My rebuild (which included a 605 overbore kit of the ebay kind as well) continues to smoke, although now it only smokes at a stop; mostly from the breather pipe, although I get a steady puff puff from both exhaust pipes as well at a dead stop, especially in this 85 degree plus maryland heat. At any speed except a dead stop, or with hard acceleration, It doesn't smoke. My 605 kit has a one piece oil ring. postings here suggest that these kits are henry abe kits... I looked hard at the directions I put the  rings in; I had to tear the engine down and drop $45.00 on a new cometic head gasket after I put the scraper rings in upside down and had oil dripping from my pipes...

I almost don't want to ask if these one piece oil rings are unidirectional...

Wish I'd had directions with the kit I bought. I was totally on my own
installing mine. If it hadn't been for a post from Bryan Jones here,
I'd never have known there were actually marks on the rings. They're nearly impossible to see without a magnifier, and only slightly better
with one. Since I got it started earlier this week I've gone about 85 miles, used about a half quart of oil, and discovered oil dripping out
of number three muffler after a short ride on the highway. I noticed it smoking like a freight train during that last ride too. And, as mentioned earlier, it oil fouls the plug. I'm hearing mixed
reviews about these kits lately. And after reading the replies to this thread, I sure wish I'd went with name brand stuff. FWIW
