will painting just the covers cause extensive engine heat
« on: August 30, 2007, 05:46:12 PM »
I would like to paint the engine but everything I have read said that even engine paint will cause the engine to get hotter and possibly overheat. I was wondering If I just paint the covers would it effect heat....stator cover etc....

Has anyone had luck with painting the engine without increasing heat...I like the look but would hate to cause more heat to my engine...any help by someone who has experienced this would be awesome.

Your entire engine came painted from the factory, so I don't think stripping that finish and adding your own will make much of a difference.

chemical; I think media blasting- at least with certain types of media- may harm the alumanum.

as gordon said, most of your motor is painted already. I'm a pedantic type so I remove mine with elbow grease and brillo pads( if it isn't loose don't shift it)

This may be "apples and oranges" but I just bought a few lbs of wrinkle-black powdercoat from Columbia Coatings that is approved by H-D. Harley has powdered their motors (cylinders included) for some time now with no overheating problems. I have powdercoated a KZ1000 and had no overheating issues. Perhaps the CB750 is exceptionally vulnerable but I doubt it.

if you're talking about the covers only, i don't think it would have a dramatic effect, especially if you are using a light coating of engine enamel. the finned areas do most of the cooling.

The finned areas, in addition to the cases and covers, also come painted from the factory, so stripping and repainting them will have no real effect either.  Unless, of course, you lay it on really thick.

use aircraft stripper, the stuff works FAST and it wont harm aluminum. be damn sure though, that you wear gloves and dont get the stuff in yer eyes.and be sure to wash the motor afterwards with soap and warm water.

Aircooled VW engines, have black engine tin. It is said that the black radiates the heat better than chrome. Seems weird but the old timers say it is so.

Not weird at all. :)  Matte black finishes radiate heat best, shiny chrome finishes radiate heat worst.  That's one of the reasons why all those hopped up VW engines with all the chrome parts had so many overheating issues.
