i've been thinking about doing a modern triton for my next project bike. i work at a machine shop so any custom fabbed parts would be no trouble

I guess the featherbed frame would gladly accept any engine that fits. Problem is that used modern triumphs are not so cheap to come by -well, neither featherbed frames...- for somebody to give it a try. I would be more interested in featherbed repro frames......

  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
I thought about it when the new Trumpy's first came out, Ken McIntosh in New Zealand builds excellent Norton wide-line repro frames, and an engine from a modern Bonneville wreck wouldn't be too expensive, but Triumph have pretty much covered it with the new Thruxton.

There's also a company here in Oz building a Triumph based "retro-racer" with alloy race tank and fairing etc, I'm looking forward to seeing one in the flesh!

Here's a pic of the Thruxton, to you guys who've only seen "American" Cafe Racers, this is what a traditional Cafe Racer looks like, you'll note that there's no "clubman" bars, poxy 16 inch Harley back wheels, or chopper "drag pipes" etc in sight, ha ha! :D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Amen brother Terry,

No drag pipes, 16' harley wheels, or clubmans indeed.

Seems like I recall every bike used to come with a free optional set of clubmans.
You turned the stockers upside down.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

Thing about it is the concept of the cafe bike came from blokes wanting to 'modify' their bikes to 'look' and perform better, a'la race bikes of the day.  Eventually in the 1980's manufactuers started catching on and doing it for them.

In my opinion, the cafe concept is still the same -- modifying your bike to 'look' and perform better.  It doesn't matter what parts you use.  It doesn't have to look like someone's ideal of a 60's-70's cafe bike.  It's the cafe concept of what you are trying to do that makes it a cafe bike.

Amen!
That Thruxton is very nice and I know you said it didn't have clubmans but that pic sure looks like it.

You got that right Unky Ernie, and the only set of clubmans that I had that were any good was a pair I turned up the other way, they were very comfy on a long ride. Maybe that was how clubmans were supposed to be mounted all along? Cheers, Terry. :D
