Chroming in Canada?
« on: December 21, 2006, 11:16:03 AM »
Anyone know of a good place to get chroming done in Eastern Canada?  I'm in Moncton, New Brunswick and called the only place I could find (Halifax) and they quoted me $1200.00 to $1500.00 to have a frame chromed!!!  Is this a ridiculous price or is this what it goes for?  I think I'll stick with polished and clear coated or maybe just a new coat of black.

Hi Memphis,

Im in Porters Lake - Just outside Halifax.

When you got quoted on the frame. Was the quoted price for droppin goff your frame - paint and all, and picking up a shiney chromed one?

95% of the labour involved in chroming goes into the prep before hand - stripping, blasting, polishing mirror-smooth and finally nickel-plateing and then chroming. If you can prep beforehand the cost drops significantly.

Hey thanks.  I'll call back and ask.  If I do everything you noted how much is significant?

I cant say exactly, but remember that chroming will not "fill" any imperfections in the metal whatsoever. If you want a mirror-finish chrome job, then you have to be plating metal thats already polished mirror smooth. So when you drop off your rusty, paint chipped frame, you are paying the hourly wage of the guy who has to beadblast and polish the thing before it ever gets near the electrolysis tanks.
