Hondaman,

When referring to widening the lobes are you referring to duration?

Pinhead,

From my understanding of VTEC as installed in my Acuras, you not only get variable timing but also variable lift. It's really amazing how well the 3.2L/198CI Legend would breathe at 140mph - pulled strong.

Uh...did I miss this question?  :-[

Yep, widening is longer duration. Sorry: my wife says I talk like I'm stuck in the '60s. Might be right....

Walter (ding-ding-ding) I remember, but not the other guy.
Walter's name popped up in some of the rags I regularly followed. But, I've forgotten what he did: my heroes in those days were Bugsy Mann and Rusty Bradley (until he tried to drive into the rail too fast one day). I yearned to meet Mike Hailwood, too, but never even got near where he was..  :-\

Hi Mark, Walter Kaaden was the person that perfected the rotary disc valve motor invented by Zimmermann.
Walter worked for the East German MZ factory at Zschopau and in 1961 was rewarded with the honor of achieving 200bhp per litre from his single cylinder 125cc machine.
Ernst Degner was the rider of the bikes and worked closely with Kaaden in the development of the bike.
At the end of 1961, Degner defected to the west and took the secrets of the rotary valve to Suzuki.
The rest is just History.
