What have I gotten myself into? - 77 750 F2
« on: September 06, 2007, 07:21:21 PM »
With my 550 nearing completion and my normal weekly scan of Craig's List, I just purchased a very functional 77 750 F2.

http://newhaven.craigslist.org/mcy/412664989.html

When I saw the seat in the picture I almost did not call.  I said to my self "what the hell - it won't hurt to have a look."  Mechanically, the bike is in excellent shape, it needs some significant cosmetic work, but nothing too drastic.  I'm thinking of a new seat to replace the comfortable but ugly one that's on there.  A fresh paint job - I'm thinking blue or silver would be cool.  The Kerker needs to be pulled off and sand blasted and re-coated.  Once the motor is repainted, it should look great.

On the Mechanical side, it already has a few nice upgrades, schrader valves to air charge the front forks, braided brake lines and Dyna coils.  I will give it a full tune up as soon as I get it home, it could also use a new rear tire as well.  I probably paid a couple of hundred too much (I did give him the $1,100 he was asking), but all of the 750's I have seen lately (locally) have either been disasters or pristine (over $2K).  Hey they way I look at it the parts alone make it worth it.  I guess the side covers are hard to come by?  In any case, looks like this will keep me busy for a while.

Of course, any suggestions on where I might take this will be welcome.

From another F owner.

Ride her like hell.  She'll love you back all the more for it.

Shift between 4 & 5 K and give her some freeway time.   Just don't miss a shift and send the tappet nut spinning off into the engine somewhere (like I just did) and you'll be golden..
You can't make too much popcorn, but you can definately eat too much popcorn.

Thanks.

I'm really looking forward to riding the bike through the end of the summer and early fall.  Then I will tear into it - hopefully I will sort through my ideas by then and over the winter I will get through most of the cosmetic stuff.

From a brief scan of ebay - looks like a major challenge will be to find the parts.  There seems to be lots of stuff out there for K models, not much for the F models.

Looks like you will have fun with your new F.

If you were in Connecticut @ $1200 I would have bought your bike.  With the exception of the bars and missing side cover, your bike looks like what I'm shooting for.

Good luck selling your bike and enjoy your new one!

Distance can be a pain...

I'd like to see it go to another enthusiast, one who will appreciate it and bring it to the next level, but I guess one can only worry about so much.
