Bigger is better
« on: September 07, 2007, 07:36:45 AM »
I take night classes after school because I aspire to get my bachelors degree one day.  I go to school in Baton Rouge, and reside about 15 miles away, in a city that is one of the fastest growing cities in Louisiana.  While on the highway in my car, I rolled down US 190 (Florida Blvd.) which is not very well lit for a growing city, and saw a little red floating light that seemed to be far, far away.

I often drive with my windows down instead of running the air conditioner, so I could hear the pipes....  That little red floating light ahead of me was actually RIGHT ahead of me!  I could hear the pipes, but I could NOT SEE the motorcycle.  Yes, this Harley had a little bitty brake light that could hardly be seen.

For about 5 miles, I cautiously drove behind our nearly invisible Harley friend, maintaining a safe distance, wondering the entire time, "Does this guy know that people can't see him?!?!"  & "Thank God for loud pipes."

Right now, I am in the middle of Project Jasper, and I have been thinking about eliminating or cutting the back fender, and putting a small, sporty brake light on the bike.  After last night's experience, I have decided that as far as brake lights go, bigger is better.

So when Jasper is done, don't expect to see a small, sporty tail light.  Expect to see a big freakin' tail light.

On one bike I had, I put an additional set of res turnsignals (from a Yamaha) on as extra brake lights.  It was painfully obvious when I was braking.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Yeah my Yammy has 2 dual filament bulbs in the brakelight.  It damn near blinds you at night, but that's what I'd prefer.  My brother in law rides a '70 Moto Guzzi Ambassador with a tiny freakin tail/brakelight.  You can barely see it, and I really don't like to ride behind him cause I never know when he's actually braking.

I'm with you on the issue...  I don't really care how big the brakelight is, just so long as EVERYONE can see it (even the half-blind-90-year-old grandma who can barely see over the steering wheel)  ;)

Had one of these on the VFR. It certainly woke people up.
