Deer me....
« on: September 08, 2007, 07:13:19 PM »
I rode home Thursday night from the local bike ride at about 11 pm. The next morning as I left the subdivision, there was a very dead dear right across from the entrance on the shoulder. I know it was not there the night before as it was very obvious.

The speed limit on this road is 30 mph which means that most people go 40 or so. This is a built up area with very few woods around for them to hide, but there are a few unsold 1-2 acre lots across the street they can probably hide in. Also, in Fla. all the new subdivisions have to have retention ponds for rain run off so there is no shortage of available water.

This is the third upended deer I have seen in the last month. My neighbor saw a large buck not three feet off the road (right between two subdivisions) at 6 am the other morning. All this leads me to believe that the deer population is getting ready to overtake us.

If you believe the videos on U-Tube and people I've talked to, you have about zero change of avoiding hitting one as they dart across out of your side field of view. By the time you see them, it is too late to react. Probably the only thing you can do is slow way down...especially at night....and hope to survive the impact.

Just a heads up. Ride carefully.

Jim

Yup, here in north Georgia they're thick.  I usually pass several every night.  I had 3 jump out in front of me the other day.  You just have to keep a keen eye and slow down when you see them.

There heavy everywhere.  I live in Virginia, inside the Washington D.C. beltway.  My son was driving through an older, heavily wooded neighborhood and a deer came out of a driveway, slamed into the side of his car, and ran off.  My son never actually saw it, the only way we knew it was a deer was the fur caught in the door handle.

Then there's the sightings INSIDE Washington D.C.  Not Pennsylvania ave or K street.  Rock Creek Park.  Along the C & O Canal.  Loads of them.

There everywhere.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

They are quite thick here in rural Wisconsin. My wife had a pair of them follow her when she went on her morning walk the other day. The best way I have found of avoiding them is to watch for them at the far edge of the headlight beam and realize that if you see one it means there are 5 more in the ditch waiting to run across the road. At 30 mph they are pretty easy to dodge but I wouldn't want to try it any faster. When they get scared they become very erratic and can turn around and run back in front of you even after getting past you. At least if you are going slow you can stop completely and yell at them to get off the road.
There are old bikers and there are bold bikers but there are very few old, bold bikers.

They are like squirrels here, I have them running through the yard every evening. I see at least 2 a week dead on the side of the road. My wife did $5K of damage hitting one. A few years ago a guy in the next town was riding along when a deer popped out and knocked him in front of a truck going the other way.

Deer are slight worries here in maine.   At least their eyes are reflective.

Those damn moose have eyes that don't shine.  A couple people die each year here when a ton of meat comes flying through their windshields.

You wouldn't think so but here in California across the Bay from San Francisco we have them all over the place as well.  When you get into the hills the deer, raccoons, skunks and squirrels will reek havoc on your ride if you're not careful.  I had one run next to me on the side of the road for about 50 yards before it crossed in front of me and jumped a fence into someone's yard.  Cover your brakes, slow down and pray.  Hopefully you will see them coming and will be able to avoid them.

The woman who was driving this car in Ontario was lucky and walked away with a only few scrapes and a broken wrist.

I spent a few weeks in Newfoundland where moose outnumber people and the general recommendation was to not drive at night.  The couple times I was on the road after dark, traffic crawled along at 30mph and you could occaisionally catch a glimpse of moose along the side of the road.  For a big animal, they move suddenly and can barely be seen standing in dense forest - on Cape Breton Island, I had one come up a hillside, over a guardrail and onto the road in front of me in a flash; fortunately, I was traveling slow and could brake in time.  The moose trotted off down the road while I drove along behind with my video camera.

A deer came through the front window of my wife's Taurus at 65 m.p.h.
a while back--along a wooded interstate 64 in Virginia--she was O.K.
Firemen who responded asked her if she wanted the deer !
They did.

There are some big animals out there. I know here in ND we have some big deer. The white tails here get around 200 pounds. We also have some mulies here and they are even bigger. But nothing compares to ramming into a cow at night! Angus cows are all black here and they are big. They are almost impossible to see at night and they do not move. you hit one of them, and your car or truck is done.
