Spring has sprung! Terry's first K0 ride today!
« on: September 09, 2007, 04:08:42 AM »
Ok, so I know I've been telling you guys that Oz has really good riding weather all year round, and compared to the cooler climes around the world, that's true, but for one reason or another, I've had the (beautiful) K0 for several months now, without actually riding it!

Anyway, my intention this morning was to sort out the carbs on the K1, but then I thought, "I better fire the K0 up as it's been awhile", so my intent then changed to taking the black beast for a quick lap around the block, then back to the K1's carbs.

I fired it up and squeezed it down the driveway past the wife's car, then into the street. It felt good, although the engine felt a little "erratic". Of course, the furthest it had been since arriving in Australia was around my back yard, so I figured that a couple of miles would sort that out.

The first corner woke me up to some "wallowing", with the centre stand scraping slightly, but then I figured that the tires could probably do with some air, as like everything else, this had been neglected since taking delivery of the bike from Andy Morris in Long Island, NY.

I stopped at the nearest Shell servo and pumped the tires up, (only about 20 psi in either, so that took care of the wallowing) and gassed it up with some "V Power Racing" 100 octane fuel, (at $4.75 US per US gallon, it was more a treat more than the norm) and off I went.

Now the engine is (as far as I know) standard everything, but with the sensible addition of one of Hondaman's ignition amplifiers, (is that the correct description Mark?) Dyna 5 ohm coils, and NGK Iridium plugs. When I received it from Andy it had later model carbs fitted so I retro- installed a set of cable carbs that I bought from our own Dennis a year or two ago, and I've gotta say that even though they are fiddly to set up, they are my favourite SOHC4 carbs, really light springs and very responsive, quite the opposite of the later carbs, and my CR29's as well.

I'd pretty much decided by now that a quick lap around the block wasn't gonna cut it, so I thought I'd once again grace SteveK0 with my presence. Steve lives about 28 miles from my place, so I figured as he hasn't seen this bike yet he might like to see it, and maybe take it for a ride? Steve has several K0's in his cavernous garage (I've seen smaller factorys) but doesn't have one on the road as yet, so I figured he might like a ride on one, but it wasn't to be as he wasn't home, so he missed out.

The weather today was awesome, bright sunshine and almost warm! It's days like these that there are a lot of "special interest" vehicles out, Mustangs, '57 Chevys, and Harleys, (lots of Harleys) so I was surprised at the attention that I was receiving on the old black K0. The bike ran sweeter with every mile under it's tires, the wallow vanished with the addition of a bit of air in those continentals, and the exhaust note from the HM300's (sans end baffles) was magnificent!

As this was really a "shakeout run" prior to getting it (legally) on the road, I kept the distance down to a shade over 100 klicks, (60 miles) and was happy that nothing had fallen off it, there were no oil leaks, the brakes worked ok, and it sounded even better as I arrived home and once again squeezed it past the wife's Hyundai.

When I got home the wife reminded me that I was supposed to take her to see "The Bourne Supremacy", so that put an end to doing the K1's carbs, but what the heck, it was still a SOHC4 "red letter day", ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I'll look forward to more ride reports from Oz as I watch the snow fall here in northern Wisconsin. Even if I can't ride, i'll feel better if I know someone is!

Glad you got it out, Terry.  It's cooled off enough to ride here, finally.  Rode yesterday, and today with Irish Guy.  Enjoy the nicer weather.

Thanks Guys, and to answer Mick's question, yeah, I'm slowly replacing the non-K0 parts with genuine (where available) or quality repro parts, but I don't know if I want to restore it back to "show-room" quality.

I think "neat, but regularly ridden" is more the look I'm interested in, the trouble with restoring something back to "show-room" is that it makes you too shy to ride it, for fear of undoing all your good work, then you get frustrated with yourself and sell it, that's not what I want. Cheers, Terry. :D

G'Day Sean, I'm actually thinking about selling the "Bavarian Murder Weapon" because I just don't ride it often enough, and it's a bike that needs to be ridden every day.

I've been riding my Suzuki GS1000S a bit lately, it's an incredible bike, and will happily pull to 90 MPH in second gear, and maybe 150 in fifth, (I've seen 145, and that was scary fun) so between the K0 and the Suzy, I don't really need any more bikes, so I should sell off the other 8 bikes in my garage and just enjoy the two that I have.

How are your projects looking? Cheers, Terry. :D

I keep waiting for a $500 GS1000 to pop up but it hasn't yet. In the meantime I'll just be envious of ya :P ;D

The Sumbich survived unscathed from my initial blunder with the 4th gear selector. Got the CR 29's on this weekend and have been throttle happy ever since. Suzy rearsets are working out great and I found a shifter rod that fit perfectly. Terry cooler, Terry fork brace, and one day Terry paint :)   In the meantime I am kinda diggin' the "rat bike" look of rust, busted fairing, and black everything. Looks like a well weathered superbike of yesteryear but screams like a modern rocket ;D

No worries Sean, the "Terry Paint" will happen as soon as I get some painting weather, I gotta paint my K0 tank, sidecovers, airbox, headlight ears, headlight, etc etc, plus Geoff Cadden's and your stuff, so there'll be a "paint fest" happening in the next month or two. It's pisssing down rain here as I type this, but it'll dry up soon enough.

"Hondaman" has just sent me an 836 bigbore kit and cylinders, RC rods etc, so I'll open up my K2 engine and fill it full of good stuff in anticipation of some summer riding, ha ha! What jetting set up are you using? I'm gonna fit Mike's stage 3 head, Megacycle 125/75 cam and CR29's? Cheers, Terry. :D

I've got a Kerker can with no baffle fitted at the moment. Just doing initial tuning and am having to richen up everything more than I'd like. Tried 120, 122.5, and 125 mains with no luck so far. 130's arrived tonight and are in the bike for tomorrows commute. Needles are in middle clip, 62 pilot jets with 7/8 turns out. I hope to try out that X-pipe in the next couple weeks, if that doesn't work to my liking I'll fit a Supertrapp to the stock F2 header.

No worries and no rush on the paint, mate. I'm still in trial period with most everything on the bike and it's kinda nice not to worry about scratching stuff when I'm yanking parts ;) :)

When are ya heading this way? Seems I still got a...er....ummm  JPNS-1 seat to get ya somehow :P ;D

No worries Sean, let me know what you end up with jet-wise, I think your engine is similar spec to mine apart from your APE crank that I can't afford, boo-hoo!

The K0 purchase put paid to my travel plans this year, but if I can unload all these other bikes I might be able to make it over there next summer? (I know CA is pretty good all year round, but I want to see a bit of the US, including places where snow falls in winter, which is no good for this ol' crocodile.........)

Don't worry too much about that seat mate, when it gets here will be soon enough, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. :D

Yeah, yeah, "I'll just paint it up, then I'll re-chrome those parts there, then I'll overhaul the carbies and put new zinc spokes on her, and those mirrors aren't the real deal and that front guard is all wrong and I need a short chain guard....and I need a ducktail seat, and the brakes need to be reconditioned and that number four pipe could use replacing and blah blah"...   Like I told you, but you wouldn't listen, you knew too much,  "It's just going to be an honest daily rider etc, etc" and now you are thinking about selling some of your bikes to concentrate on the K0, so now you have to pay and pay and pay so good luck, but you need to listen to your kiwi cobbers who can advise you etc, etc, blah, blah....so good luck Terry....dig deep now!....(The worlds longest paragraph so far and the honour falls once again to a kiwi)........

No worries TC, your powers of reason are only exceeded by your verbosity, ha ha! But buying the K0 had bugger all to do with my need to "thin the herd", I just can't afford to keep 'em all registered, roadworthy, and ridden!

I'd intended to do the same anyway when I was doing up the K1, then my mate offered me the BMW at a bargain price, then I picked up a K2 cheap, then Andy offered to ship me the K0, ( a major task, as you know) and before long I had a garage full of bikes that I don't need, nor do I want.

As I said when I first bought the K0, I'll gradually bring it up to spec, but I don't want to be a slave to a large and unweildy collection of old motorcycles, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. :D

Terry, the 130's are a bit much. 3/4 to WOT is a bit "spluttery" before it takes off. Think I'm going to bite the bullet and take it to the dyno with the jets I have(120-130) so I can see what the needle position is doing since it may have an affect on the transition to WOT.

Sam is jetting down from 118 since he changed from the open 4-4 to a 4-1. Who knows, I may be going in the wrong direction trying to jet up. Can't do a proper plug chop with this bike so I'm guessing by how it responds :-\

Don't forget, if you don't like those "Crazy Monty" X-pipes, you know a little boy in Oz who'd really like some............... (I'll bring a big suitcase when I come over, ha ha!) Cheers, Terry. :D

Sean, try putting your needles down a notch (clip one space higher than middle). Thats what worked for me.I'm still running 138.5 mains and its going good. I bought some 130's to try out but haven't installed them yet. Took it up to work 2 days last week (Murphys-2200 ft.) And it was still OK. I can tell you on mine.....I started with needle clips in the middle and went the wrong way( clip one space lower than middle........way too rich). Good luck and let me know if you try it.

Thanks Fred :)  After yesterdays ride that is exactly my thought. I put the 125's in and they seem to be the best bet at WOT, the transition to WOT is still "spluttery" so I'll be dropping the needles a step tonight ;D

Terry, you bring that big suitcase and we'll send you away a happy man. All the Makers Mark you can drink along with everything that is too heavy/big to ship. Even if you can't make it to California you can be met at your destination by packages up to 108 inches, cheap ;) ;D
