mirror threads are shot
« on: September 11, 2007, 01:25:51 PM »
I just took my cover off and guess it yanked on the mirror.  wasn't hard BUT now the threads are shot and the mirror just spins around.  I NEED to go somewhere in 2 hours, i WILL need to replace the piece,
So my question IS:
what can I do to hold it in the meantime so it,
1) stays
2) won't ruin the threads on the mirror so I can re-use it...
(if I don't decide to go with the bar end mirrors after this)

thx all

maybe add a 2nd nut to threaded shaft as a locknut

Bit late to help, but the extra nut on the bottom works well, I've done it. And if it still spins than put a little Teflon tape on the threads and jam it on there with the nut too.
Temporary fixes of course, might be able to put a heli-coil in there to restore the threads for a more permanant fix.

I've done the heli-coil trick for mirrors and it worked like a charm.

Loctite also make a liquid thread restorer, but I've never tried it and it's doubtful I ever will...

a pinch o' coarse steel wool kinda wrapped around the threads will work to get them to grip, at least temporarily.

(heli-coil is the real solution though, for sure. ... )

is it the threads on the mirror or the threads on the bars ?  if its the bar side thats stripped you could always find somebody that had a tap and die set to retap it for you  i doubt you could do that in two hours but its something to think about beyond the temporary fix

peace out
