I think I remember a member here doing the same thing to a 400 super sport if I remember correctly, but I am not sure what mods he had to do to make it fit.     Yeah I think this is it.  I saved it because he had made some brackets to fit newer calipers on the swingarm as in the bottom pic.

Not that much is needed Jim, you need the forks and the trees, and you might need to replace the GL steering stem with the 750's to fit the 750 frame. I take it you'll be using the GL front wheel and brakes? Make sure you fit the bigger GL master cylinder too! Cheers, Terry.  ;D

For the wheel,  you will need the GL rotors, rotor bolts, spacer, speedo drive and axle.  These should work with a 750 wheel since the hubs are identical, however the GL wheel uses a nice lightweight alloy DID rim so you might consider getting the entire assembly.  You will also need the GL calipers as they are completely different (this is a good thing) from the 750 pieces.  For reference heres a pic of the GL1000 front end on my 78750K. Note that stock GL rotors don't look like swiss cheese.

Hiya Jim, here's a link to the thread I posted on the subject...

http://www.sohc4.us/forums/index.php?topic=16903.0

The swap is really pretty easy on a 750.

From what I remember....you need to sell your 77 forks and hunt down a pair of 1975-76 GL1000 forks. You will need everything from the top clamp to the tire (including the brakes) but it will all bolt on. As far as I know the 77 forks are different enough.

The other posts handled this pretty well so I will only add this one thing, unless you are going for the chopper extended fork look, get a set of clip-ons  and mount them above the triple tree by sliding the forks through. you will also need to fab a mount for your gauges.

you might need to replace the GL steering stem with the 750's to fit the 750 frame.

It bolts into the stock frame. Replace the bearings with tapered bearings.

Apparently not.  ;D

Apparently so.

The K&L part number for the 75-76 GL is 31-5830 and the bearings measurements are 26-48.5-15.2 and 30-50-14.4. The K&L part number for the 77-79 is 31-2260 and the bearings are 26-47-17.3 and 30-55-17. The frame was modified on the GL in 77/78 to accept the different bearings(they went to a tapered roller bearing) but the steering stem is the same.
When putting the 75-79 GL stem on your CB 750 SOHC, you would use the 31-5830 bearing set (it has the frame dimensions that are correct for the CB frame and the GL stem).

You would use 25-47-15 and the 30-55-17 bearings (mentioned above) when installing bearings on many Suzuki models like the 82-83 GS 750. They have the K&L Part number 31-2218.

I thought that the stem was identical to the SOHC 750 stem?  Shouldn't this mean that the tapered bearing kit for the 750 would work fine for the conversion?

 They are and it does.
The Allballs 1004 kit may come with a 26 -47-15 bearing with an adaptor for the 25mm stem (for the GS). I dont know. The height difference could be made up with a shim/washer under/over the bearing. K&L Cycle shows 2 different sets for the 82 GS 750 and the 78 GL 1000. Pro-flo shows both bikes using the same kit.
The sizes I listed come from a K&L catalogue. They have a web site but all it shows are their expensive tools.

eric,who drilled your rotors?

Got em a good while back from a fellow on ebay. I was about to do the drilling myself when they appeared before me while browsing.  Holes are a bit larger than what I would have done but the pattern is precise, they are chamfered, and they work well.  Much lighter compared to an undrilled rotor too.  . . . .

Jim, I've got a '75/'76 GL1000 speedo drive that I won't be using. Is that what you're looking for or the actual speedometer? If you can use the drive I'd be happy to trade it for a little aluminum welding. I've also got a master cylinder (needs a rebuild) that I will be getting rid of too...decided to go with a later model MC.

Good price on those calipers btw...did they come with the brackets?

Hope the bolts holding your caliper halves together aren't as badly locked as some of the ones that I came across.  Also the caliper pistons are often rusted to sh**. . . . Have fun!
