Some Ideas I've Got For My Old Super Hawk (w/ a CA motor)

         Kinda been trying to gather up needed parts for the old 63' Super Hawk to:

         1. Convert the CA77 motor to a CB77 motor. (have most of   
             the parts now, thanks to a member of the honda305.com,
             a SOHC4 member & some ebay sellers)
         2. Convert the 4sp trans to a 5sp (parts have been purchased
             by me and has been picked up by a buddy, who is from
             hondatwins.com & will ship to me, as he can)
         3. Adapt CB450 carburetors & adapt a CB160 front fender to
             it (per instructions from a honda305.com buddy
         4. Move the footrests back to rear position for "mild" rearsets.
         5. Adapt a headlight for a halogen element "for some powerful 
             lighting. (want to use standard Super Hawk taillight, but
             with a better bulb set up. Looking for suggestions here)
         6. Stock gas tank and needing the chrome panels w/ rubber
             knee pads & some kind of emblems.
         7.  Install tapered roller bearings for triple trees. Need to talk
              to HondaMan about swingarm.
         8.  Want a set of reverse cone megaphones for exhaust   
             
       That's about all I've got right now. I'm still working on the
details and collecting parts, as I can. Not sure about the paint yet and I'm not sure if I want to paint or polish the motor. I have considered a cafe style seat and a small fairing (Very small).

      OOPS, forgot to say that I had some pictures of a Super Hawk that gave me the inspiration for the front fender and the 450 carbs.

I must have missed the info on how to use cb450 carbs on a 305. So how ya do it?

          Hey Kevin, wondered when you'd pop in on this. There's a honda305.com member who I got the idea from. He did it about 30yrs ago and didn't document anything. He said that he made a couple of aluminum adapter plates that attached with countersunk allen head screws, attach  the carb mounts as far up as you can and slightly to the right. He had some more info on it but that's about the gest of it, except he said he used 450K0 carbs. I'll send you the full details as I know them. Something I need to know is, is there any difference in the actual outer dimensions of the early 450 carbs compared to the later model ones? I will say that he told me that he tried to rejet the carbs but, they worked great with stock jetting. There was no "bogging" (no hesitation at all), idling was more stable, virtually no increase in top end but, gas mileage increased. He and a buddy took a trip (the buddy was on a stock CB77) and the mpg was 10mpg more on the Cb77 with the 450 carbs.

The problem I see is that the later CB450 carbs are connected. Not sure on the earlier ones. The connected ones use a single cable with a shaft to run both carbs. Not sure how one could adapt that to the 77?

       Sorry bout that, I didn't make it clear what I meant by "Later" model carbs. I've got some carbs from an early to 74' 450. So, they should be basically the same. I just didn't know if there had been any kind of redesign through the years of the 450 DOHC carbs.

The CB 450 KO carbs have the idle screw on the inside of the carbs. The later ones have them on the outsides. Other than that and the minor jetting differences they are basically the same (for the early DOHC 450's). The connected CB 450 carbs are probably off a later version CB 450 with the CM style head.

          Hey Daniel, Thanks for the info! ;) Definitely appreciate it. Never done any kind of work on the 450K0, got part of a 69', but  mostly 74' stuff. So, what I've got should work. I was thinking the same as you, about those connected carbs.

You may have problems with the headlight idea.  I can't believe the CA puts out enough amps to run everything and a halogen.  I hear a HID setup will put out heeps of light and draw less than a standard H/L.  But then there's the expence.

If the halogen headlamp bulb is the same wattage as original it will not require more current (amps), the halogen lamp is a more efficient light and therefore brighter.
That is my understanding.

          Well, ordinarily that may be true. But, I've got some inside info on a mod to the alternator. If things work out, I'll post the mod w/ details for all to see. ;)

                           Yes Sir, I sure did! ;)  Got the head from CBGBs (here on SOHC4) and, it's a CL head. I would like to have had a CB head but I'm okay with that. I have the end plate for the CB cam w/ the tach drive provision for if I happen to come up with a CB cam. Nice thing is (for those who don't know), that the cam comes in two halves with the drive sprocket in the middle. So, IF I managed to get a left side (has the tach drive provision) the matched up well with the right side (that I already have), I could go from there (FAT CHANCE!). Then I got a really nice crankshaft from a fellow on ebay (and it wasn't even listed). I've also gotten the Type I points plate with good points and I've got a deal going for a good set of coils. Main thing left, is too take care of the seized pistons.   
                                     Later on, Bill :) ;)

         Wouldn't mind having a side stand (that I don't have) but, they have been listed at around $120 or so. I think I'll pass (or maybe figure out how to use a different one without looking too out of place.)

       Chris, The Scrambler pipes would work on either one. The main difference I know of, is that the cam on the Super Hawk, is a bit longer on one end and is designed to run the tach drive cable off of. From what I can find out, the rest of the head is the same as the CL (Scrambler). The CA head (that is on the motor now) has a slightly milder cam, one intake port and is possibly milder ported. The CA motor would perform pretty well but, I DO NOT want a CA motor in my CB77. Call it what you will. BTW, I may sound like I'm on a rant but, I'm not. I'm cool. 8) About the Scrambler pipes, I do happen to have a set that are somewhat rotted close to the rear end of the pipes and I HAVE had thoughts of cutting the defective parts off and adding a set of short megaphones on there. ;D We'll just have to see how this goes. As far as the overall look, I'm just kinda playin' it by ear! Basically, I want the basic Super Hawk look with some (but not a lot) difference. Does that make sense? Not sure it does to me. ::)
I've got a picture of what it looks like now and believe me, it's NOT pretty! :-\ I just can't seem to get it posted. I've even tried to put it on Flickr (I've just started using that and have put some pictures there) and can't even put it there! :( Oh well, eventually, I'll get pictures on somehow.

         I thought when I went to that Flickr, my picture problem would be solved. I'm going to see if I can get the issue resolved and , if I can't, then Photobucket, here I come! ;D

         Just sent a message to a fellow that has the Super Hawk coils w/ brackets, complete set of gas tank mount pieces w/ the rubber parts too and a small piece that goes on the motor side cover to complete the hiding of the chain. Those parts should be making their way to my house before long! Then, as soon as I receive the word, I'll be finalizing a deal on a set of gas tank panels w/ the rubber knee pads and my Super Hawk will be that much closer to having the parts needed.

          Here's the side cover piece I was talking about. Item #3 in the upper right part of the picture.

I put the honda305.com electronic ignition on mine and it's made a big difference in starting and idling.
I have a "spare" CB77 engine in boxes where the right side cam is worn so the points cam is loose and the ignition timing jumps all over. I'm unlikely to ever get around to fixing it, so if you need the left cam half we can talk.

That old bike is in rough shape man but you can save it i know it...Heres a possable seat idea for ya man,
