Best blasting material?
« on: September 11, 2007, 10:35:01 AM »
I am needing to blast my engine cases, and was wondering what you guys would suggest to use? I also need to do parts of my frame, and some other bits here and there. But I have heard if you go to abrasive on the cases, it can cause serious damage...so what do you guys think?

For aluminum engine cases. Glass beads are great....  When I want more aggressive cutting and paint removal from steel I use aluminum oxide....

I've used glass beads with good results.
Just got some walnut shells and soda that I'm going to experiment with on the side covers etc.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

I recommend Glass beads, it leaves a nice finish for paint too.  just make sure you get every last little glass bead out of the engine before you put it togeather.
That stuff will cut through bearings like they were made of cardboard ;)

I used a masonry? product called black beauty. it was more coarse than fine play sand but would still pass through my old sears and robuck  sandblaster nozzle. I only used it on the frame...
