Got rearended... Keep it and fix it or replace it? '79 CB650
« on: September 14, 2007, 10:08:24 AM »
Well, I was just rearended on my way to work. Sitting at a stop light and the car behind me got rearended, which in turn hit me. It folded my rear fender into my tire, which gave me a flat, and for some reason my clutch cable seized. It's going to take a little money to fix and do it right (it needs work anyway) so It's decision time. Do I keep it and fix it up or do I try to find my dream bike?

Before anyone asks... Yes, my dream bike is a SOHC4! Just want an '81 or '82 CB650.

However, one of the guys that helped me remove my clutch cable after the wreck has an '82 KZ650 with 1100 cylinders, piston, and top end for sale. It's been cafe'd with drag bars, etc. He wants $600 for it...

I can drive my bike as it is for now (once I get the new clutch cable in), but it looks like crap and would like to have something that looks decent.

What do you all think?

Will you get compensation from the accident? I don't envy you the decision, but bear in mind that the 650, broken for parts to sell on eBay or wherever, still has a lot of value. I'll take the speedo!

I'd search for the 'dream'.

Well if it just the fender, tire, and cable then keep the bike. Those are going to be relatively easy fixes and will not take a long time.

Even if it's only superficial, make sure major components aren't damaged.  Make sure the swingarm is not cocked and the frame is straight.

How do you think it damaged the clutch cable?  Is it just the cable or something more.

Eldar is right: if it's just the fender, tire and cable, fix them and keep the bike.  If it turns out to be more, and it's more than you're able to or willing to fix, then I'd say chase that dream.

I think I'll wait to see what I get out of the insurance... Hopefully they don't total it out 'cause it's so old. It just may happen that I get enough money to simply buy the KZ and ride it while I slowly rebuild my 650 (or part it out lol).

Hmm... I have been considering chopping the rear fender for a while... But making it look right would eliminate the luggage rack as well, which I constantly use (and which happened to save my back, my tire, my seat, and my taillight when i got hit). I'm going to have to ponder on this for a little while.

What about reliability of the KZ? Is it as reliable as the Honda SOHC4's?
