How to repair stripped rear shock upper studs
« on: October 24, 2007, 09:58:48 AM »
The other day I removed that rear passenger bar thing from my K5 that mounts to the rear shock studs that come out of the frame. In replacing the nuts, I tried cranking one on the right side that was the wrong thread width and stripped that stud. I think the stud threads have a width of 1.25 and I tried installing a 1.5 nut.

What are my options for repair? Fortunately, this is the first stud (or bolt) I've stripped, but that leaves me with no experience in fixing this type of thing. Thanks in advance for your help!

Did you just strip the start, then a thread file will fix it..

I would say that your best bet would be to cut the threaded section off and drill and tap a hole in the remaining shaft and either put a threaded stud in or use a bolt since it only hold the retaining washer and doesn't actually support the shock. But I don't know if that would make  the actual shock mounting shaft to weak??  Or you could just try to grind/file the stripped section down and rethread smaller since it doesn't support any weight!

I actually foolishly cranked the thing on about 80% of the way, thinking if I could just get it snugged up I could pretend it never happened and not touch it again, but that's as far I could turn.

Thread file may still help it, to where it may hold torque and you can loctite it on..worth trying.
Will try to meaure one today see what next threadsize is..

It was .015.. a 64th inch bigger than 3/8.

If you carefuly die cut 3/8 NC (deeper thread) it should clean up. may need to file to reduce size ....use a 3/8 open end wrench to guage this a bit loose is OK.
