will fuel system cleaner harm these engines? I put a container of STP fuel system cleaner in with about 3/5ths of a full tank 5gal yesterday. Took off towards Ocean City from Salisbury MD. 20 miles into a 30 mile trip, all run around 70mph, I noticed a different sound in the engine, as if I was dragging a cylinder or two, or that something uneven was going on. After turning around, I didn't notice any increase in smoke, but still it was running uneven. 5 miles into my return leg, I pulled over at a filling and noticed that my 1 and 2 pipes were smoking. those pipes were exposed to a lot of oil during an oil line leak a few months ago, but this was excessive even for pipes with header wrap on them. after the bike sat for a few minutes the smoking stopped, and I got back on the road. still I was running with a lot less power and a lot more heat coming up from the engine. when I stopped to cool, I also checked the oil; with bad valve seating I smoke a lot of it out at lights and on acceleration, but the oil level was OK. the only change in what is a normal sequence of events when I ride was the introduction of the fuel system cleaner into the fuel system. did it make the engine run hotter than normal because of the ratio--1/2 pint (or less) of fuel system cleaner to about 3.75 gallons of fuel?

I use carb cleaner in the gas a couple of times each season. However, I keep the ratio the same as suggested on the container based on the size of the bike's fuel tank. As I recall, that was about 3 oz. per tank. I'm not sure what using an entire container (meant for an auto fuel tank) would do.

Double check the plugs and wires. I always seem to hit these moments as well and usually it is never related to the "improvement" I have performed. ;)

I've had some experience with fuel additives and used the STP once in my Volks R32.  I know totally different beast but my mechanic said basically everything on the market is s*** except for BG.  The STP threw a check engine light in my R32, the BG did its job without any problems.  Some of the cheaper additives have junk fillers that may clean your carbs but reek havoc on your plugs.  Just a thought.
