5 ohm coils
« on: September 17, 2007, 03:30:29 AM »
Ok guys i wanna throw a 5 ohm coil setup on my bike as ive had a coil go bad  but i dont wanna replace  with stock as i like to be able to replace my plug wires(I have a 72 cb500) so is there any stock coil(s) with a 5 ohm output that also has changeable plug wires  I cant afford a set of the dynas right now but am planning on going with them after tax time rolls around i just wanna be able to ride my bike a couple more times before it gets too cold

also when talking about the output of these coils is that 5 ohms each or five total for the pair?

The cb900s have 3 ohm coils, maybe even a bit lower. If you are running a dyna S, you might be able to do it but with the cb500, the charging system is a bit weaker than the 750. I know you do not want stock but coil wires are long lasting as long as they are not yanked on all the time.
Why not go to www.partsnmore.com and get some coils from them. Probably cost around $60 for both brand new. Dont throw out all options.

but they're probably gonna be yanked on all the time as this bike still on occasion insists that it died long ago and that it cant be being ridden  as that would be impossible

I however disagree and tell the bike  that it might just as well get used to the idea of rolling again for no other reason at this point than I am more hateful than she is ( Has to be a female  anything  male wouldve seen the futility in arguing the same point over and over again  and just conceded because it was more peaceful that way)

C'mon guys I need some five ohm output coils that  arent dynas as I dont have a couple hundred bucks to throw away right now, but i need some with removeable/replaceable plug wires anybody got any ideas ? A Goldwing maybe I would think that with all that extra crap stuck on em theyd have high output/heavy duty electrical everything.
Thanks Guys

Jimmy

You could add an in-line ballast resistor, similar to
the coils on a Goldwing.
This might be worth a read:

If you're going to invest in some Dyna coils in the future anyway, why do you need a set of coils right now that have replaceable wires?  Just get some that are good enough for the time-being and save your cash for the Dynas.

Anyone here ever use the cheap emgo coils?
z1 has them http://www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=2857 I guess they are 4 ohm. They have removable wires  These aren't the ones w/ removable wires see the emgo catalog pg. 87
http://www.emgo.com/main_layout.html
...Would that work?

I still do not see the need fo replaceable wires. They are not that weak and if you are yanking on things that hard, you need to re-think your maintenance procedures. I still have the original coils with non-removable wires and they show no signs of breaking....After 30 years.
