Nor Cal newbie
« on: September 18, 2007, 10:03:58 AM »
Just thought I'd intro myself before I toured the site. I'm a 58 year old male with the body of a 55 year old. I live just outside of Sacramento CA. I just picked up two CB750s, a 72 that has been all choppered up and an almost stock 76. Both bikes have been sitting for quite awhile. I got the 72 running, it sounds pretty good even though the intake ruibbers are split. I'm gonna try to start the 76 tonight. I put a couple of squirts of Marvel Mystery oil in each cylinder yesterday. The 76 will be the restoration the 72 will be sliced and diced into something unatural but appealing. Wish me luck,   Jbird 8)

A resounding welcome to you! I'm a twenty year old with thirty years experience and a beer belly! I just got back to riding again last spring after twenty plus years of dealing with family crap.

Welcome from SoCal.  I guess I would be an 18 yo in a 46 yo body, which means that my 15 yo twin boys were born when I was mentally 3 (and my ex would agree).

Thanks for the welcome guys. I got the 76 cranking over tonite, I had to jump the solenoid. I think the ignition switch is toast. Where do I go to find out how to hotwire the ign sw? I'll snap a couple of pics and post them tomorrow..... nite all  Jbird 8)

Jbird a good wiring diagram will show you what wires to connect for power and which to connect temporarily for the starter. It may be that all you need is to take the switch apart and clean it. Be very careful though ,there are little springs and detent balls that want to jump out and get lost. Good luck!

Breeze is talking about people like me in El Cerrito.  Most of us would drown a puppy to get some people together for a ride!   :o  OK, that was a bit extreme but you get the idea.   ;)  Welcome and keep those pictures and reports coming!

Here's a couple of pics as promised. Not real purdy but good restorable bikes, well the 76 anyway. I got the 76 fired up tonite. It tried to start after I squirted some gas into the carbs but then the starter quit cranking the engine. The starter would spin but the engine wouldn't. I pulled the alternator cover off to change the starter, about a half quart of oil poured out onto my spotless shop floor (see photos). I found the bolt that holds the alternator rotor to the crank had loosened, the rotor and starter ring gear spun freely. I tightened up the bolt (impact wrench very carefully) and everything seemed normal. I got it ready for another starting attemp. I added a qt of oil just in case. It fired up and ran smoothly and quietly, I only ran it for a few seconds. Now I have a concern about the oil in the alternator case, is this normal?? Now I have to decide which one to mothball while I work on the other.  Jbird
